Its not common but you may have water in your gas. You will need to check engine for both fuel and spark. If the car will start then die off a short squirt of ether then it would be a fuel problem. Then you'll need to find out if it to do with the fuel or the fuel system.
if you have tried starting it for a while , this can give off a petrol smell because if the engine isnt firing then the bores are getting floaded , the fuel cut off switch should only switch off for a reason ,, EG head on bump , part from that the switch could be faulty. but when the car runs after a short while and still stinks of fuel i would advise to get it checked out asap .. matdav69
its better to get a mechanic to do it then do it your self, if you do it yoursel u will have many more problems for the incorrect timing. find a low cost effective dealer and you will find that cheaper and quicker then doing it yourself.
