there is only one proper way to do this and that is remove and dismantle the engine examine replace or repair worn out componants if a main bearing is worn out then a lot more of the engine is also getting worn out do it properly and your will be good for years to come
The noise is most likely a worn pinion gear bearing. There are 2 bearings on the pinion. The diff will have to come apart to inspect/service the bearings
I'm going to say it is a main shaft bearing that is wearing out, much like a differential or axle bearing. You might do some online research for that model and see if it is a common problem with other owners.
