The shifting, including that of the overdrive is computer controlled. It's even possible that the tow/haul feature has been activated through short, or such. The tow/haul function deactivates the overdrive, and raises the pump pressure in the transmission, causing it to shift harder and at different points. You might want to look into these.

Your distributor is bad(sloppy). you may not think or feel it is because the engine may run smoothly but if you put it on a scanner it will show. do not get one from the junkyard! get a new one. this will give you back OD. . .you can unplug the drac module(vss buffer) by computer and it will reset for 1 or 2 shift sequences then lose OD or 4th gear again. now you know one reason things went to distributorless ignitions. very common among 5.7/L480E combos including isuzu box trucks NPR W4 4000, with gm powertrain mentioned.

4l80e overdrive 4x4 does not shift into drive or overdrive

I'm afraid if you have not changed the trans fluid
every 3 years since the vehicle was new, on all your
vehicles, power steering as well, you will have to pull
it & rebuild it

I have a 1990 GMC Suburban. The transmission is slipping. I still have reverse, 1st, and can manually shift into second. No 3rd or overdrive... it just slips. What should I look for?

is it a 4l80e electronic shift transmission....it may be an issue with the solenoid pack...you can take it to someone who has a scanner tool for the trans...if it is indeed a 4l80e

4L80E trans. Lost passing gear/overdrive suddenly

Bad transmission, that's not a good answer. Bring it to the shop [so we can guess around], not a good answer either.

A good mecahanic will respond with something about the solenoids.

I have repaired the 4L80E on my tow truck, I have to do that almost every year, the last time it ran perfectly but when I push the pedal to the metal, it shifted from 3rd gear to 2nd and stays on 2nd gear until I turn the ignition off and start again.

The transmission was totally rebuilded so the answer "Time to rebuilt the transmission" is not acceptable.

I took it back to the shop and the mechanic replaced both solenoids A and B, that was the only thing that hasnt been replaced before, it was just a guess but works

So, I am not a mechanic but my sugestion is to replace the two speed sensors and solenoids before you take the tranny out of the car and be carefull who are you taking the transmission to because guessing is not always the best course of action

The two speed sensors are easy to replace, the solenoids are inside of the valve body but you may be able to replace them without removing the transmission from the truck
