Engine overheats, thermostat is good, water pump good, head gasket good

  • Anonymous Feb 19, 2010

two garages pressure tested system, one of them for 3 days. Originally the van would start to overheat but if I kept driving it would g back to a normal temp. I thought maybe the thermostat was sticking so I had it replaced. This is when they did the first pressure test. After I got the van back the temp gauge seemed a little higher than normal but everthing seemed to be okay, for the first hour. Then the van started to overheat everytime I used it. Towed to second garage, pressure test for three days, no problem found. Water pump removed and checked, no problem found. Now I am stuck. Spent$700 and still have the problem.

How do you know the head gasket is good...you could also have a cracked head, exhibits the same symptoms as a blown head gasket. Also, air pockets in the water jacket can cause overheating...tell me more and I can help solve this.

I have seen this before...as a matter of fact, it actually happened to one of my cars...the temp would get extremely hot then all of a sudden drop to the normal range...(like a stuck stat), I did replace the stat and the problem continued...I knew however that the stat was not opening at the proper time, because when it did, I could watch my temp hand drop to normal. The problem was air in the system...took a while to get it all "burped" out, now it works perfectly. Keep an eye on the coolant levels and the resevoir fluctuation. This was the defining moment for me, the resevoir level dropped suddenly, I refilled and the problem went away. Good Luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful!

By the way, a pressure test will not necessarily reveal a cracked head...depends on the temp that the crack expands at...check your oil for coolant...(make sure you have no oil in the coolant), secondly, depending on where the crack is, (If you have one), you could be loosing coolant thru the exhaust...same is true with a head gasket. Hopefully however, it will be the air issue and you can get it worked out!

Nissan Maxima. Can a water pump or thermostat cause mixing oil and water?

Question edited for clarity.

No to both. The water pump is chain driven and takes water from one side and pumps it out under pressure from the other. The thermostat is fully enclosed in a housing with no access to oil.

Oil in Coolant only comes from a failed head gasket where the oil and water channels are in close proximity and under combustion pressure of hundreds of pounds.

Water pumps are designed to pump water through the engine, radiator, and heating system. Water pumps will not cause oil to enter the cooling system.Oct 4, 2016

Overheating problem for 1996 Hyundai lantra sportswagon

If you have already checked the radiator, fluids, thermostat, and thermo fans and your 1996 Hyundai Lantra Sportswagon is still overheating, there could be other issues causing the problem. Here are a few other things you can check:
  1. Water pump: The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine and radiator. If the water pump is not functioning properly, it can cause the engine to overheat.
  2. Head gasket: The head gasket seals the cylinder head to the engine block. If the head gasket is damaged or fails, it can allow coolant to leak into the engine, which can cause the engine to overheat.
  3. Cylinder head: If the cylinder head is cracked or damaged, it can cause the engine to overheat.
  4. Engine block: If the engine block is damaged or has a crack, it can cause the engine to overheat.
  5. Clogged radiator: If the radiator is clogged with debris, it can prevent the coolant from flowing properly and cause the engine to overheat.
To determine the cause of the overheating problem, it will be necessary to perform a thorough inspection of the engine and related components. If you are unable to locate the source of the problem or are not comfortable attempting to fix it yourself, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic.

Check engine comes in when engine starts to overheat, which it does in slow traffic. Radiator, fans, water pump are OK.

Did you check/replace the thermostat? Another possible cause may be hair line cracks in the head(s).

Thermostat was replaced and water got into oil

Hi valerie, but changing the thermostat DID NOT caused the problem, there was a serious engine overheat that damaged the head to engine block gasket and possibly deformed the aluminum head too. To repair, head needs to be checked for flatness and resurfaced if needed, and a new head gasket needs to be bought and installed. Needs to be an EXACT replacement,a s there are variations. good luck.

You NEED to use proper coolant-antifreeze in the proper concentration and diluted with demineralized water, and keep an eye on engine temperaturas when driving. Possibly, a radiator and water pump check and fix is needed too. Amclaussen.

How would i know if my overheating problem in my 97 Geo Metro Prizm is a radiator, water pump, blown head gasket, cracked head or a thermostat problem. is there some way i can check for this?

Oil and coolant mixed usually means the engine is damaged.
Blown head gasket, or cracked block - head.
You may have coolant in the engine oil too.
I would not drive it.

My car is rumming hot and the antifreeze is leaking I'm thinking it's my water pump

It could be the water pump , or something else , like a faulty thermostat. Where is the coolant leaking from ? If it is leaking from the water pump , then yes , your pump might be toast.
If the thermostat is no good , the engine will warm up to normal temp , and then overheat quite quickly. As it overheats and the coolant expands and boils , it could back up into the overflow reservoir and leak out onto the ground. You need to get someone to diagnose the problem ASAP , running your engine in an overheat condition could very quickly blow your head gasket and/or warp a cylinder head. If you can , please post a bit more info. Does it run but at a higher than normal temp. Does it only overheat when stopped in traffic etc.
Could be water pump , or thermostat , or plugged up radiator , or nonfunctioning cooling fans.

94 Jetta w/2.0 engine overheats.I took it to a mechanic and he said my thermostat was fine.So what else could be causing it to overheat??And it does have a small oil leak too but I can't pin point it.

Overheating could be anything in the cooling system. Thermostat is out, could be radiator, water pump, broken belts which cause the water pump to not move, cylinder head warped, cracked, or the cylinder head gasket.

It is overheating in 32 degree weather.....I have checked to see if my radiator is gettign enough anti freeze and it's fine but i dont know why it keeps overheating

The engine overheat is due to inefficient cooling. Therefore, there is coolant in the radiator but if it doesn't circulate inside the engine water-jacket to remove the heat generated from combustion's chambers, then it still causes overheat. If this keeps happening then it can cause the engine head wrapped then leaking from the gasket as people called blowed head gasket. It could be: 1- Thermostat is not opened. 2- Water pump is not working. Before starting to replace parts, it needs to verify it it is the root cause of the problem. Take out the thermostat and run the engine to feel if there is water flowing inside the upper hose. A- If it is not then water pump is not working. B- If is, then run the car a few days without thermostat to see if it causes overheated. C- Running car without thermostat still causes overheat then there are some clogging up in the water jacket defeating the cooling efficiency--> Need a good flush. Good luck.

Truck over heats instantly

Chances are, and I know this sounds kind of stupid, that the thermostat was installed backwards. I had the same problem once, after replacing the entire cooling system it still overheated and that is what the issue was. I would definitely check that. I hope this helps and please don't forget to rate me.
