That's a good name for a car in such a dilemma...
Mystique... 1997 (posted both 4 & 6 cylinder parts).

Since the lifting is the hard part... it would be better to take it to your cooperative PARTS HOUSE FOR TESTING..

you might GET to do everything at least twice (bad idea).

If you have the bolts.. the job gets a lot simpler.
Generally you have a Huge (POS +) wire that connects
from the battery DIRECTLY to the SOLENOID.

First thing:
You want to do is DISCONNECT the GROUND
at the BATTERY (NEGATIVE (-)) terminal.
(Always first off & last on... always... safety first).

Connect the "S" lead to the "S" terminal
(battery KEY switched ON only in START Position) ...

this is not an easy job ---you have to separate engine and transmission so either have to drop transmission or pull engine up out of vehicle because theirs not enough room to get to flywheel if you try to separate them in engine bay go to library or auto store and look up or buy a repair manual .chilton or hayes it will show what you will be up against also will show what special tools will be needed

A few things ,97;tune up, fuel filter,air filter,clan throttle body,put in tank some fuel injection cleaner good one not cheap.

any auto parts dealer will have the insulation for wiring harness doesnt matter where ya go just make sure you do get heat resistant and that should help you out

You will need to replace your speed sensor switch located beside blower motor 2inch by 1inch single plug if you had a replacement in hand you could better identify it.

Call your local auto wrecker.

When you go to wide open throttle, the only thing that happens is your a/c cut out is activated by the throttle position sensor. I owuld check there, but it is very rare that the TPS would cause a fuse to blow.
You may have an engine wire harness that has the wiing insulation decomposing causing wires to short against each other. Peel open the plastic convolute and look for cracks in the insulation. Here is info on a Ford program to repair if less than 100,000 miles on your car.

I have a 97 too, got it used and have had it for 6 years. Mine has over 120,000 miles on it. transmission has been replaced, now the alternator just went out. My car did this "cugging" and trying to stall for the longest time before the alternator went.
You should check all the hoses for sludge build up (especially if you let the gas get below 1/4 tank), then check the battery and altanator. These seemed to be the major problem with the car. Although now the electrical system in the car is going.
To make alternator repairs at a shop is just under $400.00 or you can do it yourself for parts and about 30mins of work for $170.00.
You can have the battery and alternator checked at Advanced auto parts or Discount auto parts for free.
