I have a 2000 Galant 2.4 sohc balance shaft belt broke and everything went out of time. I replaced belts and set tdc and lined everything up but when i try to start it wont start?

    Hey thanks for ur solution. When i turn the crank 2 times the oil pump sprocket is always off i made sure i did what the haynes manual told me and put the screwdriver threw the block to check it i even reset it.everything else lines up but the oil pump sprocket.

    i have lined it up 3 times it starts out lined up but it is way off after 2 turns but if i go 4 turns it lines up.

    thank you fro the diagram. if you can it would be nice to have a full size one my email is [email protected]. I did line all those marks up and put the screwdriver threw the block to line up the oil pump driven balance shaft but when i turn the crank twice with the belt on for some reason the oil pump sprocket is almost half a turn, and i made sure nothing slipped. it does line up in 4 turns. is that ok? when i say 2 turns i meen the crank sprocket turned 2 times.

Check for spark and verify that the crank sensor is working.

Do an OBD scan too and see if any sensors are not responding.

Check also the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor !
Caution: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur! A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head!

Hello when you replaced timing belt did you turn engine proper rotation 2 times and recheck your marks if you didnt the tensioner may have slipped and you lost the correct timing hope not also check compression you may have bent valves and low compression if all good the recheck for spark may have tor up crank shaft sensor wires. hope this helps Thunderboltz

    okay turn it 1 time and see if everythibg lines back up it has to reline back up for it to be correct.some times you have to set the bottom mark back one tooth and then line up the top and and then release tensioner for it to come out correctly.

How to replace water pump in a 1992 mitsubishi galant

All Mitsubishi cars pretty much hide the water pump under the timing belt. You should buy all new belts for the car and consider replacing the water pump at the same time.You will have to take off the power steering belt, the alternator belt, the upper belt cover, support the motor, take off the motor mount, jack up the right front corner of the car, take off the front right tire, take off the engine plastic under cover, line up the TDC timing mark, Take off the front wheel ,take off the plastic splash cover, using an air wrench take off the lower pulleys, take off the lower engine cover, observe the timing marks/arrows and highlight with paint (on the crankshaft,counter balancer shaft , and cam shaft),take off the timing belt, counter balancer belt if there is one, water pump belt, and now you can unbolt the water pump, scrape the gasket, and replace it. Now the good news, if you have tools,a compressor, an air gun(for lower pulley bolt), patience , and four to eight hours to kill, you can actually do it your self.

4cyl 2000 honda accord engine stalls while idling, recently died and will only start for short periods... possible problems/solutions?

check for spark and fuel after it dies.

If there is spark but no fuel, then the fuel pump may be bad or a clogged fuel filter.

If there is fuel but not spark, then the ignition control module or the ignition coil could be bad.

Also, check that the timing belt is timing the engine correctly.

2.3L Engine

To Remove:



  1. Record anti-theft code for radio.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable then positive cable.

  3. Turn crankshaft pulley until TDC is achieved.
  4. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  5. Remove front tire assembly.
  6. Remove splash shield.
  7. Remove power steering belt.
  8. Remove alternator and alternator bracket.
  9. Safely support engine under oil pan.

  10. Remove stop, detach ground cable and remove upper bracket.
  11. Remove cylinder head cover.
  12. Remove upper cover.
  13. Remove dipstick and tube assembly.
  14. Remove crankshaft pulley.
  15. Remove adjusting nut rubber seal and remove lower cover.

  16. Loosen adjusting nut 1 turn.
  17. Push up on balancer belt tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  18. Push down on timing belt tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  19. Tighten adjusting nut 1 turn.
  20. Remove balancer belt and timing belt.


To Install:


NOTE: Clean balancer belt drive pulley, timing belt pulleys and
upper/lower timing cover prior to belt installation.

  1. Set timing belt drive pulley to TDC by aligning dimple on pulley with dimple
    on oil pump.

  2. Set camshaft pulley to TDC so that "UP" mark is at top and grooves align
    with top of cylinder head.

  3. Starting with driver pulley, install timing belt in a counterclockwise
    sequence.
  4. Loosen and ten retighten adjusting nut.
  5. Install balancer belt drive pulley.
    NOTE: Inspect rubber seal on lower cover and replace as necessary.

  6. Install lower cover.
  7. Install crankshaft pulley and bolt.
  8. Rotate crankshaft pulley counterclockwise several times to seat belt.
  9. Loosen adjusting nut 1 turn.
  10. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 3 teeth on camshaft pulley.
  11. Tighten adjusting nut to 33 ft lb (44 Nm).

  12. Turn crankshaft pulley until TDC is achieved.

  13. Ensure that camshaft pulley "UP" mark is at top and grooves align with top
    of cylinder head.
  14. Remove crankshaft pulley and lower cover.
  15. Rotate crankshaft to TDC again and lock timing belt adjuster arm with a 6 mm
    timing cover bolt.
  16. Loosen adjuster nut 1 turn and ensure that belt tensioner freely moves.
  17. Push tensioner up and tighten adjusting nut.

  18. Remove bolt and washer from maintenance hole.
  19. Using a 6 X 100 mm bolt, scribe a mark 2.9 in (74 mm) from end.
  20. Insert bolt into maintenance hole and hole in balancer shaft.
  21. Install bolt up to scribed line.

  22. Align groove on balancer shaft with pointer on oil pump housing.
  23. Install balancer belt and loosen adjusting nut 1 turn to tension.
  24. Retighten bolt.

  25. Remove bolt from maintenance hole and install bolt and washer. Tighten to
    22 ft lb (29 Nm).
  26. Reinstall crankshaft pulley.
  27. Loosen adjusting nut 1 turn.
  28. Rotate crankshaft pulley counterclockwise 1 turn and tighten adjusting nut.
  29. Remove bolt from timing belt adjuster arm.
    NOTE: Inspect rubber seal on lower cover and replace as necessary.

  30. Remove crankshaft pulley.
  31. Install lower cover.
  32. Install seal at adjusting nut.
    NOTE: Crankshaft pulley, bolt and washer must be cleaned prior to
    installation.

  33. Lubricate crankshaft pulley bolt between head and washer and bolt threads
    with clean engine oil.

    CAUTION
    Do not use impact wrench to perform
    following step.

  34. Install crankshaft pulley and tighten bolt using special tools to 181 ft
    lb (245 Nm)
    .
  35. Install dipstick/tube assembly.
  36. Install upper cover. Tighten bolts to 9 ft lb (12 Nm).
  37. Install cylinder head cover.
  38. Install alternator bracket and alternator.
  39. Install power steering pump belt and alternator belt.

  41. Install stop.
  42. Install battery and enter radio anti-theft code.

I check the timing belt on my 2.4 sohc Galant. It seems intake. could the balaence belt cause the engine to make nosies and suddenly stop and not start.

No, the balancer belt just spins to cancel annoying or sometimes harmful vibration. It should not affect anything unless it breaks and a piece of it gets underneath the timing belt. In this case it could throw the cam and crankshaft timing off, and possibly damage the valves. Remove the valve cover and look for excessive clearance on the valves. If things are not right up top you will have to run a compression test or dig down to the bottom and check the timing marks. If the valves are bent you will have to pull the head to replace them.

My balance shaft belt broke while I was driving. It stripped some of the teeth off the timing belt and Im pretty sure it jumped time. I need a diagram to show the timing marks and how to get it back in...

see diagrams from autozone.com. Cam sprocket has an "UP" label, but also 2 scribes on the sides to align to upper head surface. The critical part of the job is keeping tension on the side of the belt that is opposite from the tensioner as the tensioner is released onto the belt. The timing marks must be aligned when the job is done.

  1. Install the camshaft timing sprocket so that the UP mark is up and the TDC marks are parallel to the cylinder head gasket surface. Install the key and tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  2. Install the crankshaft sprocket so that the TDC mark aligns with the pointer on the oil pump. Install the spacers with their concave surfaces facing in. Install the key. If equipped, install the TDC sensor assembly back into position before installing the timing belt.
  3. Install and tension the timing belt. Use a 6 x 1.0 mm x 25 mm bolt threaded through the cam belt tensioner plate to temporarily hold the tensioner.
  4. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley and rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 5-6 turns to be sure the belt is properly seated.
  5. Set the No. 1 piston at TDC for its compression stroke.



WARNING If any binding is felt when adjusting the timing belt tension by turning the crankshaft, STOP turning the engine, because the pistons may be hitting the valves.

  1. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise so that the camshaft pulley moves only 3 teeth beyond its TDC mark.
  2. Loosen, then retighten the temporary cam belt tensioner bolt.
  3. If the rear balance shaft sprocket/gear case assembly was removed, perform the following:
    1. If the rear balance shaft was moved, rotate the balance shaft until the 6 x 1.0mm x 100 mm bolt can be installed into the maintenance hole to the scribed line.
    2. Align the notch of the balance shaft sprocket edge with the pointer on the gear case. Install the rear balance shaft sprocket/gear case assembly using a new O-ring coated with fresh engine oil. The balance shaft sprocket should be installed in the TDC position. The pointer on the gear should align with the pointer on the oil pump housing plate.
    3. Tighten the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  4. If the front balance shaft sprocket was removed, perform the following:
    1. Install a suitable and sturdy screw driver or drift through the maintenance hole in the shaft behind the sprocket to hold the front balance shaft.
    2. Install the front balance shaft sprocket and mounting nut. Torque the nut to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).

  5. Make sure the balance shafts and crankshaft are in the TDC position.
  6. Remove the crankshaft pulley, and if removed, install the balance shaft belt drive sprocket.
  7. Install the balance shaft belt, making sure the balance shafts and sprockets are still in the TDC position.
  8. If removed, install the balance shaft belt tensioner and tension the balance shaft belt.
  9. Loosen, then retighten the tensioner adjusting nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  10. Remove the 6 x 1.0mm x 100mm rear balance shaft holding bolt.
  11. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley and rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions counterclockwise, stopping at TDC.



WARNING If any resistance is felt, stop immediately and determine the cause.

  1. Recheck that all of the TDC marks align for both the camshaft and balance shafts.
  2. Loosen, then retighten the tensioner adjusting nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  3. Remove the 6 x 1.0 mm x 25 mm bolt used to secure the camshaft timing belt tensioner.
  4. Remove the crankshaft pulley and install the lower cover.
  5. Install the crankshaft pulley, lubricate the bolt threads and both sides of the crankshaft pulley bolt with fresh engine oil and tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm). Do Not use an impact wrench.

            1. Install the upper timing cover and the valve cover. Be sure the seals are properly seated.
            2. Install the side engine mount. Tighten the through-bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Tighten the mount nut and bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) each.
            3. Remove the floor jack.
            4. Install and tension the alternator belt.
            5. Install the power steering pump and tension its belt.
            6. Install the splash shields.
            7. Reconnect the positive and negative battery cables. Enter the radio security code.
            8. Check engine operation.

            My timing belt broke on my 1996 Ranger. It's a 2.3 5 spd - Replaced the timing belt, aligned the crankshaft at TDC before teardown and also made tick mark to align it without having to replace timing...

            Is it possible that when the belt broke you may have damaged the engine (bent valve). Try advancing or retarding the camshaft sprocket by one tooth and see if that makes a difference.

            Timing belt broke and jump timing how do i get

            If you have the harmonic balancer still attached you can align the timing marks with 0 degree to get the main block aligned. With the head removed you can turn the cam shaft till the number 1 valves are both closed and the number 3 exhaust valve is open. Take the time to inspect the valves as well. This vehicle did not come with no contact valves so when the belt broke it is possible the valves made contact with a piston and bent. I highly recommend you get the Haynes Repair manual on this vehicle from the local auto parts store as it has detailed instructions on how to get back to TDC if this happens. It also has Pictures on this. Because this belt goes around 3 timing marks aligning those after you have the pistons at TDC if you align the timing marks on the different sprockets/pullies the timing for teh valves will be correct.

            1995 galant broken balance shaft belt

            You sould replace the belt along with the timing belt. If it gets caught in the timing belt you will have MAJOR EGINE DAMAGE!
