2006 Kia Sorento 4X4, Diesel. Starts right up but runs "rough" (more vibration than normal and valves rattle at low revs) and produces great deal of white smoke until engine heats up (after about 2-3 minutes of operation). Once engine is heated up it stops producing white smoke but exhaust still smells very strongly, as if diesel is not combusting properly? Engine valves continue to rattle at low revs. Any ideas?

If it's a Diesel motor, it doesn't have spark plugs and probably doesn't have an EGR valve. Someone shouldn't be posting advise...

I wouldn't check tire pressure on a hovercraft, likewise why would you look for spark plugs on a diesel motor?

I take that back about EGR, but I still think it makes no sense to look for problems with an EGR valve just because you see smoke in the exhaust.

Just to clarify things for others: Diesel motors have glow plugs instead of spark plugs. They get hot like a filament in a light bulb. When the cylinder is filled with diesel mist and air, then compressed to a very high ratio, it ignites where the glow plug is. Not the same as a gas motor needing a spark instead of compression to ignite.

I would check all the basics like spark plugs and check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold. With a can of 2+2 carb cleaner while engine is running --if idle goes up or down that is were your leak is--
check egr too, Lee

My 2007 Sorento is a 2.5 diesel and has all scheduled service by the Kia dealer. Its done 25,000km goes well in all respects but after being parked for 8 hours it blows a huge cloud of blue smoke on start...

blue smoke would show a lean condition. most likely a fuel line leak between pump and tank not a pressure leak.or a check valve is allowing fuel to run back to the tank
