Question about 2004 Ford F150
On the car:
You can use basic carburetor cleaner to do the spray cleaning on the vehicle just remember once done to lubricate the moving parts with some good spray lube.
I generally remove tubes/hoses leading to mine, placing an old rag into the opening, holding the throttle plate open somewhat in an effort to catch some of the junk I'm loosening & preventing it from going towards the intake.
Finally, after cleaning it & putting all of the hoses & clamps back on, I pull off the hoses I can, spray for just a second into the orifice & reattach the hose.
Don't spray & soak your electrical components, they are made of a material on the outside that will protect most of them, but the liquid cleaner can get inside & do some damage.
Off of the car: Of course the easiest method to clean it would be to completely remove it & reinstall with a new gasket, cleaning it on the bench!

You can either clean it on the truck or off, better off of the truck, that way you can get both sides. Take off the black tube coming from the air filter housing, if your going to take the whole thing off the truck, you will need to disconnect the throttle cable from the housing. There should be 4 bolts holding the body onto the intake. Get a can of fuel injection air intake cleaner, spray it in the body and on the plate, wipe dry with a clean cloth. Repeat until clean. When you start the truck back up, it might sound like it's miss firing, don't worry, it will clear up.
