Question about 2005 Ford F-150
If the LCD display is working, and the backlight is the problem, then the bulb needs to be replaced ( bulb just for the LCD display ). F150online has a how to on removing the cluster. Bit long and detailed to cut and paste into a solution here.
Here is a picture of the back, the empty hole on the left is the bulb holder for the message center backlight ( 1/4 turn bulb holder )
If the LCD display is out, then it could be a cold solder joint ( common in the 97-03 MY ) or the pin connector is loose like kredel2000 provided in his solution. Use the How to at the site to remove the cluster, and check the pin connector.

Try removing the cluster and cleaning the contacts on the backside where the harness plugs into the cluster.
