Question about 1999 GMC Suburban

I think that it is overstearing. It feels like your in 4 wheel drive when turning sharp, but the truck is not in 4 wheel drive (jacked up one side at a time, tires spin freely, also mech. shop checked that). When you watch the truck turn the tires look like it is being pushed not rolling. The problem started when I replaced upper and lower balljoints, tierod ends inner and outer, iddler arm and pitman arm. To replace the pitman arm I had to unbolt steering box to fit my puller. The truck has a 4 in. lift with 275/65/R16 tires. I tell you this because I took it to the GMC dealer in Anchorage, AK and they told me that the tires were too small for my lifted truck, but the truck had those same tires on it before I did the front end and it did not have this problem. So I put on some 31X12.5R16 and it still turned rough. The truck has been aligned and then double checked and drives straight down the road. Can't notice problem on highway only turning sharp in parkinglots. Is there something that stops the steering from going too far? I can't find anything in my Chilton.

Reading your symptoms seems like it's a cv joint, aka front axle, and not your steering stop. If it's a cv joint it will lock front tire up while turning and almost learch one end of the truck up as it turns. Does this sound like your problem? if so I bet that's your problem. Steering stops, normally there is an edge on the knuckle that hits the control arm to stop from turning to far. With turck on ground, turn wheel all the way and visualy check to see if tire is hitting frame or something else. If so, I don't know how to tell you to fix. Sorry.

The tirerods on the burbans can get wedged when turning sharp. Have seen a couple do it.

Just to double-check, you can Check for your stearing trim is in the middle and not pushed aside. Once you have done that, take everything apart, gears out and etc... turn on the car. Let the servo center and pop everything in as carefully as you can and close as the middle as you can. Re-assemble and see if it's any better.

Also, check your servo wires leading onto the board. See if any of them are loose or have even fallen off.

Another possibility that I have seen is when you turn the wheel all the way to the lock, the power steering pump is still trying to turn it further, which is why the steering feels jerky. You can blow up the pump, or a hose, by holding the wheel against the lock. You won't turn any wider if you let the wheel come back one quarter turn, but you will take the pressure off of the pump.

I drive 2002 yukon denali and was making a sharp turn when the front wheels lock. They wont turn, i finally got them to turn enough to back up out of the way. It looks like it has enough ps fluid


a broken CV or UJ on a drive shaft can cause the steering to lock up , jack up front end and check for damage to the drive shaft's rubber covers to the drive joints, push/pull wheels in and out , as in steering motion while spinning wheel and feel if there is anything restricting a smoth movement , hope this helps

Could be CV Shaft or Hub Bearing as well. Jack up the front of the car, support with Jack Stands and check for play in wheels/hubs/bearings/linkage by grabbing wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock positions for tie rod ends and steering linkage, then 12 and 6 o'clock positions for bearings. You should barely be able to feel play. If you think it is more than acceptable climb under the car while someone else performs the tasks above. Turn wheels for excessive brake noise or out of tolerance discs. Out of tolerance discs will cause premature brake wear and cause pads to move around in the caliper sometimes before starting to grind. Finally, and what I think you're hearing/feeling is the CV Shaft. Grab shaft, move around feeling for excessive play in joint or splines on each end. Turn steering all the way lock to lock and turn wheels at each lock, forward and backward, feel/listen for clicking/popping. Most of the time you can quickly easily diagnose bad CV Joints in a parking lot by slowly, safely driving in a circle forwards and backwards making the joint noise more pronounced. If it is a CV Joint, my advice would be to spend the extra few bucks and replace the whole shaft while you're there. Its quicker and easier requiring less specialty tools to complete the job.

you will know if you are in 4wd if you take it on a dry road. you will feel it fighting you when you turn sharp.. as for the blinking lights . that's your truck saying..........please take me in for some servise

it is difficult to make sharp turns while in 4 wheel drive on a hard surface. If you are able to make sharp turn easily in 2 wheel drive then everything is probably OK. Check your owners manual and review the 4 wheel drive section, there is much to learn.

My 2001 cavalier makes aconstant humming noise. When I turn to the right it goes away. I am thinking it is the wheel bearing in the front right. Has anybody else noticed something similar?


Correct diagnosis, but make sure it isn't the left bearing. Jack the car up and check both wheels for play. If no play, start and put in drive (while still jacked up off both wheels), and listen to each side for the noise.

Feels like my front drivers side tire is lose but I check all the lugg nuts and they are tight. I can drive straight and I get a loud sqweal(as if I'm taking a corner to sharp) from the passenger side...


sounds like you have either tie/thrust rod ends going bad, or ball joints. Your wheel bearings could be going bad as well. Any of these can cause this problem. To check the tie/thrust rod ends, turn the vehicle off, and have a friend turn the wheel back and forth while you look at the steering linkages. If you see anything moving more than the part that it's attached to, you have found something that needs replacing right away. For Ball joints, put a jack on the a-arm right beside the wheel. Jack it up, and watch the tire as it starts to come off the ground. If it slides out when it just gets off the ground, you have bad ball joints on that side. Wheel/hub bearings can be trickier, unless they're REALLY worn. Jack the car up so that it's clear of the ground, and see if you can make the wheel wobble by moving it with your hands. You may also notice a grinding or whining sound coming from the affected side. You'll especially notice it if you drive with your window down, as you're passing a building or other hard object, as the sound reflects back at you. Hope this helped you find your problem.

it sounds like your 4 wheel drive is engaged. whether on purpose or its stuck thats your problem, to double check jack up one of your front tires, if it wont turn then thats your problem

SYMPTOMS OF BALL JOINT WEAR


If you make a hard right or left hand turn (with steering wheel turned until it stops) you'll hear and feel a pop sensation.When you drive over potholes you'll feel a slight pull to one side.If it is one of the upper balljoints,you can grab the tire with both hands near the top(11 and 1 o'clock) and pull the wheel back and forth.You will feel looseness if the upper balljoint is bad.
