If you have a biuld up of snow in the cars engine bay under tray or wheel arch plastic lines this may be rubbing on the driveshaft or tyre

Are there damage to any 4wheel drive components shifting from 4wheeldrive setting still with transmission is indrive

Most 4WD systems are designed to be shifted in and out "on the fly". It is less stressful for the drive train doing it while in park however. 4WD does not like cornering - especially on "grippy" surfaces such as dry asphalt (why would you need 4WD on dry asphalt, anyway?). Dry asphalt is really tough on 4WD as the the tires may have minute differences in circumference as a result of wear and since all are spinning at the exact speed (even going straight ahead), those difference add up and strain the drive train. Slippery surfaces allow the tires to slip away those differences as soon as they begin to appear. Even wet pavement allows this to happen, tho not as easily as grass, dirt, snow or ice.

Drive in a tight, complete circle on dirt and you'll see that there's a shorter path of tracks for the inside tires than those on the outside. Yet, the 4WD locks all wheels to turn the same amount. The jerking during the cornering that you're feeling is the inside tires trying to spin to "catch up" to turning at the same rate as the outer tires. See the video linked below.

Check your manual and you'll likely be cautioned against running 4WD on dry pavement for these reasons.

Front is making noise when I turn

Kim:

Check your wheel bearings and ball joints. Checking the wheel bearings: stand next to the front tire, crouch down, put your hands on the top of the tire, and try to rock the top of the tire by pushing the top of the tire away from you and pulling the top of the tire toward you (rock it hard and fast). do both front tires. Any noise or sideways movement of the tire is bad, (Bearings are worn) and needs to be repaired. Then, stand at the front corner of the car, and push down on the front corner of the car repeatedly (rocking the corner of the car up and down (Rock it up and down Hard) If you hear the popping noise your ball joints need to be replaced. If these tests don't work but you still get the popping noise when you drive, take the car to a mechanic. Popping noises from the front end of a car is dangerous. If anything happens up there, you could lose your steering!

Hi, On my 2001 X-Type, I hear a squealing commin

You have a bad rear hub bearing. It at times starts as a low humming sound, then will increase to a screeching sound..you can jack the car up and have both rear wheels off the ground palce your hands at 12 and 6 pm and try to check for loseness.also if you have a creeper, just to eliminate a bad carrier bearing you can check the axle near the differential by checking it for play also. But I am leaning very much towrds the hub bearing.I have changed several of these...

After 2 foot snow and riding on snow packed roads, rumbling noise from under car.

With all due respect, what the H___ are you doing driving in 2 Feet of SNOW? The rumbling noise you hear is most likely caused from Snow being impacted in the CV Joints, Wheel Wells and anywhere else from freezing in place after driving in the "Deep Snow". The solution is to have the care raised on a Hoist and Pressure Washed to remove all Snow and Ice from the the entire Bottom Side of the Vehicle. It then should be allowed to dry thoroughly in that building before being driven. Additionally, if any noises occur upon exiting that facility turn around and have it repaired before it costs you untold thousands of dollars to repair.

Next time you have "DEEP SNOW" wait until the Roads have been cleared, salted or sanded and are back down to pavement before driving on them.

1999 Grand Am SE, weird noises, possible transmission problem???

I cannot say for sure but maybe a suggestion that it IS your transmission. The front wheel drive in these cars tend to cause problems for the transmission even at a young age. If you're driving around in the snow also you could be wearing out the gears prematurely. Sometimes a warning sign is the sound the gears make (humming and grinding) before one or more gears give out.
