Replace it. its usually on the top of the engine. follow the coolant hose from the rad to the engine. there should be a goose neck with 2 bolts holding it to the engine. remove it and theres you thermostat

Where is thermostat? How test it


Hi L Rod:
- Thermostats are usually located on the top of the engine, under the fitting that is attached to the hose that connects the top of the radiator to the engine.
- If the engine is running too cold it could be stuck open.
- If the engine is running too hot, it could be stuck shut. There could also be a lot of other possible causes.
- To test a thermostat, remove it from the engine. Do this when the engine is cold. The thermostat should be closed. Use pliers to hold the thermostat and immerse it in boiling water. It should open.

I can't even see bolts on thermostat


I changed the thermostat on my 96 century 3.1. Take whatever you can off to get to it. It's a really hard job for such a simple repair because of the nearly impossible access. I used a flashlight, mirror, stubby wrenches and my wife's tiny fingers. Also use a failsafe type thermostat, it's better to be stuck open than stuck shut.

Why the water not circulating throw radiator


If your water is not circulating you can only have one of two problems. Either your thermostat is stuck shut and needs to be replaced or your water pump has gone out and needs to be replaced. I would start with the thermostat because it is cheaper and easier to get to. I hope this helps you out and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

99 alero overheats. then blows the fluid back out the overflow. is the thermostat shot and froze shut or open? used to v8's, where is the thermostat in this 4cyl?

95 Ford is making a thumping sound and the car smells of antifreeze after warmed up. Makes same noise after car is parked and shut off. I suspect it is a bad water pump.


Good Evening, What sounds like is happening could range from a thermostat being stuck shut or a waterpump not circulating the water and your getting the air hammer of the water boiling in your car. First thing to check is your antifreeze level when cold to be sure it is full. Once you know it is full check the thermostat because it is an easier thing to check then suspect the waterpump if the thermostat is not stuck shut. Let me know how it goes.

Engine gets hot but radiator and coolant still cool


Your thermostat is probably stuck shut. When the car is cold, open the radiator cap and fill the radiator to where you can see the coolant. Start the car and have a friend watch the gauge rise as you watch the coolant. At a little before or right at half way the thermostat should open and you should see the coolant drop. At this point the car should also have heat. If you can not see the coolant drop it can be one of 3 things.
Thermostat stuck shut water pump is bad blockage in radiator or cooling system.
Heres what I would do to rule out water pump 1st. Disconnect the line that goes from the water pump to the engine from either side, the pump or engine. back away and start the car. You should see coolant coming out of the water pump. if you dont try to put water into the hose to make sure the water pump has water in it. It could be empty if the pump is after the thermostat and it is stuck shut. If the water pump has water in it and nothing comes spraying out when you start the car, the pump is bad. If it does come out you need to remove the thermostat and push against the wafer in it on the opposite side of the spring and see if it moves. If it does not moves (wont be easy) the thermostat needs to be replaced.

Teperature gauge running hot and heater not working


If the car is hot and the heater blows cold air your thermostat is stuck shut or your radiator is really low on water/antifreeze check when engine is cold hasn't been ran like overnight take off the radiator cap and if it is low add so antifreeze/water if heater still blows cold air or water level is ok your thermostat is stuck shut and needs to be replaced.

The car keeps overheating and the coolant and water level are fine. i dont know what else it could be


Thermostat could be stuck closed - put your hand on the hoses (after the engine has been running a bit) and check if one is cold. If one is cool to the touch - the water pump has failed - or the thermostat is failed (stuck) shut (supposed to fail open).

Radiator fans inoperable - check the fuse and relay.

Head gasket failure - would need to be checked via piston pressure check.

1999 isuzu rodeo no heat the temp reads cold


The water temp (coolant temp) is cold all the time? Thermostat stuck open. Replace, not good for car. Computer can't adjust well to that and will cause fuel economy issues, never allow car to warm up properly. Opposite of thermostat stuck shut causing overheating. If the water can't be restricted enought to heat up and then be maintained at the correct temperature your car is not operating efficiently, won't pass smog I'd assume, etc. Thermostat is at end of upper radiator hose in thermostat housing. Two bolts to remove. Pop out thermostat and see if its stuck open. It'll have a gap if it is and it will be shut if not. You can boil water vigorously and hang your thermostat in it with a wire or something and watch it. It should move open from closed at a noticeable rate. When removed after fully opening, it will close as it cools. If it doesn't move and is stuck or moves EXTREMELY slowly it's done. Replace gasket, replace thermostat, light coat of sealant on gasket if you wish and torque down evenly. Replace lost coolant. Hope this helps.
