Hello Arlene.
On your Malibu there is no dipstick provided.
To check it there is a plug near the bottom of the transmission on the left side that needs to be removed and checked for level. It should be level with the bottom of the opening.
There is a red cap at the top to be removed to add to the level if necessary.
Not sure what the wisdom of this was on General Motors part but it sure is a pain.

On the right side of the motor you can see the trasmission there is a dip stick that is almost tight to the engine usuall red i color and hard to see hidden by the exhaust manifold on the v 6 not sure about the 4 cyc but same trans, it has a 1 to 2 in round disk on its top. turn it counter clock wise it screws in. some times it doesnt have a dip stick on this and what has to bee done is there is a plug on the passenger side of the trasn half way up remove it and pour trans fluid in the above description until fluid pours out of the plug half way up the trans. i hope i explained this good enough

The dipstick has a red handle on it and between the engine and the firewall about in the middle of the engine compartment. Change the fluid often on those cars about every 30,000 miles. The 4T65E transmission is costly to rebuild, keep the fluid clean.

Make sure the car is in park with the engine running and pull out the transmission filler tube dipstick and wipe it off. Put it back in the same place you took it out of. Then pull it out again then look at the level position of the oil at the bottoim of the dipstick. 1 quart is equivelent to about 1/2 in

Transmission stuck in higher gears on highway/fluid fill level

The 1998 Chevy Malibu does not have a transmission dipstick. Instead there is a check plug located on the transaxle, near the pan, adjacent to the engine oil drain plug.

Note: the vehicle must be kept level when checking the transmission fluid level.

Place an oil container under the check plug and remove it. Observe the fluid as it drips into the pan, indicating correct fluid level. The fluid level should be at the bottom of the check hole. Double check to make sure the car is level. If no fluid drips from the check hole, some fluid should be added via the red cap. But add only a little at a time until the fluid is at the bottom of the check hole.

Check trans fluid level on 2000 malibu with no dipstick

There is a red fill cap on the transmission bell housing under the brake master cylinder. You'll have to look real hard to see it. There is also a bolt on the passenger side of the transmission that you remove to check the level. Transmission must be warm and the engine running. You add fluid until it runs out the bolt hole. Typical GM engineering. Just check the owners manual. It should tell you something about this.

Transmission fluid level

It is usually printed on the Transmission dipstick.
Engine warm, engine running, on level ground. Check level on dipstick, shoud be somewhere between add and full. Do not add oil if it is not below the add line.
