ok, i will get the battery tested. Would a multimeter work to test it? i was thinking alternator because of the way it just sputters and dies after a few minutes of running.

  • dra0429 Feb 08, 2010

Also, could i remove the alternator myself and take it somewhere to be tested, or does it need to remain in the vehicle for testing?

Hello. Even though it seems like the alternator isn't working, I would rather you have the battery checked before you pay for an expensive alternator you may or may not need. You can take the battery to a shop and have them check it first, if it is discharged too much for them to check it, they can charge it and then check it. That way you will know for sure you have a good battery or need a new one. Then you should have the alternator checked to be sure it is charging properly. This is the best way to proceed since the alternator really isn't designed to charge a dead battery, but rather it is for keeping a good battery charged. Although many people do it, putting a new alternator and expecting it to charge a dead battery puts extra strain on the new alternator. I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Hello again. It would be best to take the battery to a place like Advance Auto, Sears, or AutoZone and have them do a load test on the battery. This will give you a better idea of the battery condition. Once the battery is either re-charged or replaced, you can then drive back and have the alternator checked. It's best to have the alternator in the vehicle to check it while the engine is running.

It wont start. battery is new, has full volt. when i turn the key to start it just clicks and all dash lights dim,but when i jump start it it starts right away and will stay running for hours

The battery is not being charged and is depleted. The clicking you hear is the starter solenoid engaging. Your charging voltage should be around 14.1 volts. Check for that when you have the car running. If it is closer to 12 volts that is the nominal battery voltage and your alternator needs to be replaced! Especially important if you have a new battery since lead acid batteries do not like being in a discharged condition; it shortens their life considerably.

Good battery, key will not engage starter, jumping starter will not engage drive

jumping across the solenoid will spin the starter but will not engage the pinion in the ring gear. Have a load test done on the battery as I suspect that there is a bad cell and you are not getting a full charge. If the battery is faulty then there is always enough power to turn on dash lights but nothing left to run the high current solenoid and starter.

What is wrong when you turn the key to start and the radio and all the instruments turn on but the starter doesn't click and the engine doesn't turn on even after trying to jump start it

Dead battery

Dangerous practice to try & jump a dead battery

The battery cables could be loose at either end or corroded internally

Most likely the battery is worn out, if original to car
since it was new, or the starter solenoid is worn

You do not want to jump any vehicle made after the
year 2000 or your asking for possible problems with
todays electronics.

You need a good battery that has been tested & fully
charged, then only jump with a jump pack, not another car

Our 02 Hyundai Santa Fe has had the door open light on for years. The battery never seemed to be affected. But yesterday started by having the battery light go on. Then it died while driving. We jumped...

Charging system problem. Have a qualified Hyundai Service Technician properly diagnose
your vehicle.

Sounds like your alterator has malfunctioned and is not charging the battery or providing electrical energy to the vehicle.

When turning over starter just clicks. there is power to the battery. it can be push will not jump at the celeniod

One single click when you turn the key is a pretty good indicator that the starter is bad. If you hear multiple rapid clicks than its usually the battery. Since the vehicle will push start and run it sounds like you will be replacing the starter.

Wont start funny clicking sound when i turn the key ???

The clicking you are hearing, is the sound of a weak battery, Jump start the vehicle and take it to an AutoZone for a Charging System check.

Good Luck!!

I can not find the neutral safety switch on a 2000 buick park ave

Any chance your vehicles have a security/alarm system. Disconnecting battery on some, will arm it sometimes & not allow it to run. Using key to unlock door, on driver & passenger side have been known to work on some vehicles, but if not, a call to dealer should help.

how old is your battery, have you tried a new one?Sometimes a really stuffed battery also interferes with the ECU,and can result in switching things on and off.
