If it wont move into gear, the safety switch is malfunctioning. You can take the plug out of the hole on the upper right side of the console just to the right of the gear shift lever. put a philips screwdriver in the hole and press down. this will manually release the gear shifter mechanism.

I have seen this many times before. the brake light switch is part of the releasing mechanism for the park lever. to test this switch step on the brake and have someone check if the brake lights come on. if they dont come on you need a brake light switch. which is located right behind your brake pedal. replace this switch and your problem will be solved.

Hi i have a 2006 1.6 ford focus automatic, gear lever gets stuck. will not select from park to drive.have to put screw driver in access next to gear lever. to shift gear lever from park to drive positi

it could be that the ignition lock and/0r the brake pedal sensor that unlock (allows you to move the shifter) are/is not working correctly or has failed. You will have to check both those elements as well as the cable beneath the consul covering and the solenoid that pulls the cable.

1995 Ford Escort Wagon Automatic, Won't shift

Hi there,

Most modern automatic cars require the driver to depress the brake pedal first, to allow releasing the gear out of Park.

Some automatic transmissions also provide an 'overide' switch near the gear lever, to allow manual release of the gear lever.

If neither of the above resolve this, then you will need to check the operation of your brake switch, mounted on the brake pedal.

I am having a hard time getting my 2002 ford escort into park, and staying, as well as my key not coming out.

The key not coming out is directly tied into the car not going into park far enough. You may have something stuck down inside your gear shift area keeping the handle from going all the way into park or something could have gotten in a wedged itself up near your shifter levers on top and the side of the transmission. I would pull off the shifter console first and make sure nothing is binding the shift levers before looking at the ignition switch area.Good luck.

MY SHIFTER IS STUCK IN PARK

Helo, This sounds like the Safety Interlock controls are broke or out of adjustment. If this is the Automatic trans, you have to step on the brake before you can shift out of Park.

There is a switch at the top of the brake lever and it sends a signal to release the car from Park. This switch can be moved or broken by feet hitting it. You can look at the rear brake lights to see if they work and if they do not, then the switch is either knocked out of its holder or broken.

If you move the switch (under the dash) and get your brake lights to work, the problem should go away. If the switch is broken, replace it and align it so that the brake lights work properly.

My girlfriend's 1994 Ford Escort LX is stuck in park and won't shift.

Do you mean you can not move the shift lever? If so when you push down the brake pedal do you hear the shfit lock out solenoid move (click)? If not then check power to the shift lock out solenoid (fuse). Hope this is helpful.

My gearshift is stuck and will not shift

Check the fuse for the shift-lock mechanism. Also check the brake pedal sensor - do the tail lights come on when you press the pedal? If you need to get the car out of park, pop open the cover and press the shift-lock override button located near the base of the gearshift lever on the console.

98 escort key stuck in ignition

http://i48.tinypic.com/2qatvz8.jpg

a EAST fix, I removed the plastic around the steering wheel (3 bolts under the steering wheel) and I manually pulled the lever toward you to remove the key. THEN I used a zip tie to hold it back so my key can come out from now on... saved you $300 for a new tumbler

EASY fix and cost $.05cents.

This was done on my 2001 ford escort and it should work with other fords, like the focus model.
