Question about 1992 Chevrolet Camaro

I have a 1992 Camaro and I replaced the igniton switch in the column with a key that doesn't have the resistor like the old key. Is there a way to bypass? I get lights when the key is turned and the solenoid checks out good, but it won't start or crank the engine when I turn the key.

The resistor wire in the key shaft is what the system reads and then allows u to start the car, in order to bypass the system you need to measure the resistance value of the wire and then buy a resistor to wire into the system to bypass the Passkey Vats. here is the testing and bypass procedure, but without the old key you are headed for the dealer.


DIAGNOSIS:
The first step is to check the resistance of the chip in the key with a multimeter. Write this value down, you ll be needing it later. Next, remove the panel under the dash and look for a pair of yellow wires coming from the steering column and leading to a connector a short distance away. Unplug the connector and with the key in the ignition, measure the resistance at the wires leading from the steering column. The reading should match that of the chip in your key. While the reading might match while the key is in the off position, it will probably change when the key is turned forward. If this happens, the problem is in the ignition cylinder or the wires leading to it. At this point there are two options: Buy a new ignition cylinder and for alot of money or bypass the system for less than a dollar.
BYPASS:
To bypass the system you ll need to buy a resistor with a value matching that of your keys chip at any local electronics store. The easiest way to install this resistor is to cut the wires leading into the column about a foot from the connector. Take this section of wire, strip the ends and solder the resistor in place. Take this section of wire and resistor and simply plug back into the connector under the dash. The VATS module is now fooled into thinking that there is always the correct key in the ignition. Although this does render the security benefits of the VATS system useless, if increased security is desired, the resistor can simply be unplugged, leaving the car disabled until it is reinstalled

No you need to put the same one with the correct chip if not you need to bypass the system ill give you a general video on how to do it

Replacement of igniton switch


Lower the steering column by removing the mounting bolts under the dash. Look on top side of column for the switch, it will have a metal rod going to it. unplug the connectors, use tape to hold rod in place, and remove mounting screws. Installation is reverse of removal.

Is it a chip on your key with contacts on it? It is a resistor and has to be exact. You could measure it with ohm meter and get one at radio shack the take steering column apart and trace down the wire going to contacts and attatch it there. I think
Or get a can of electronic contact cleaner from autoparts store. It is about 3 or 4 dollars. And spray it into your ignition. It doesnt conduct electricity so spray a lot. Work the key in and out while you spray. Then turn back and forth. And maybe it will clean contacts enough to work again. for now. I did it to my car and worked great. It was a lincoln, but I also started pulling the steering column down all the way before starting it. That helped for it. You may want to keep the key off of key rings because the weight pulles in sideways while it is in run mode. That may be part of it? I hope this helps. If this doesnt help it could be bad connection on fuse or relay. Pull them out and clean with cleaner then plug em back up.

I just put a new ignition lock cylinder in my 92 Camaro Rs and I can't turn the key to lock which keeps it from releasing the key. What should I do?


Your ignition switch may be out of adjustment. If you did not pull apart the whole column and get the rack, which is opposite the lock cylinder, out of time then try sliding the switch downwards.
The swicth is located at the bottom of the column on top of the tube.

On my 1990 camaro, 2 rods on the steering column are lose what do they lead to they turn my ignition key does this effect the starter because the car turns on all lights and everything works but car wont...


one leads to highbeam headlights switch the other leads to the electrical ignition switch that turns on the car and cranks the starter if you test the purple wire on the starter with the key in the crank position you shuold see 12 volts on that purple wire that comes from the ignition switch also try moving the gear selector shifter while holding key to crank could be netural safety switch problem

If you do not have a pass key any more, then you will need to dissable the antitheft (pass key module) in order for the engine to turn over. From what I gather you have replaced the column with an older version, which will not allow any comm. with the module. The pass key module enables the starter circuit. See diagram.

I have a 91 camaro rs i put a starter in it it wont start. the guy i got it from made a new key at a chevy dealer i think why wont it do anything. ty john


If the key turns, that's all it needs to do. Check, with a test light, to see if you have power to the starter. It could be a dirty loose battery cable, or a faulty cable, or a fuseable link in the positie cable that is gone. It could be the ignition switch itself. Not the key and tumbler, the switch on the steering column. You'll have to do some checking.

yeah the "chip" in the key, you can get resistors ,because what is happening is the resistor in the key is worn and not providing the correct amount of resistance,

Hi Candie, if you have air, fuel and spark it should run. Getting to the fuel side-"is fuel getting into the engine?" Your ignition may work, your starter may work, fuel pump may work, but if you have an ignition key with a resistor inside it (little silver piece of metal in the plastic of the ignition key) the key, it could be bad and will shut down the fuel injector. It's part of the security system if some idiot tries to break the steering column to steal your car. It won't run.
I have a 92 Z28 with a 350 and I had to get a new ignition with resistor and correct resistor ohm key. About $400.00 bucks but if you search around Z28 forums there are ways to bypass this for less $$ if you want to.
