Question about 1993 Ford Explorer Limited

1 Answer

I got a key this morning from Auto Zone to perfom the diagnotics on my 93 Ford Explorer but the guy did not know which spot to put the key. Hesaid if I put it in the wrong spot it could blow my computer. Any help would be appreciated. The car is running rough when started and never really runs smooth afterwards. I believe it is a o2 sensor but not sure.

Usually a rough idle is caused by a vacuum leak. It could be the intake gaskets leaking, have you had it tuned up lately it could be bad spark plugs or wires. Try running a couple cans injector cleaner through it. I doubt it's the O2 sensor. The check engine light is on? I don't understand what you mean by a "key", there should be a plug in under the hood by the left hood hinge (I'm not sure on a Explorer, that's where it is on the "F"series) that you can plug a scanner into. The plug has 6 female spade connectors a row of 4 and a row of 2, and there should be a lone wire there to with a female spade connector (gray plastic). On those older vehicles you can retrieve the codes from the onboard computer by crossing that lone wire to the top right hand terminal of 6 wire connector. In other words, if you are holding that plug (EEC-IV) in your hand with the 4 terminal toward you you want to jumper the lone wire (gray plug) to the top right terminal, you can use a paper clip. Now turn the key on but don't start the engine the ''check engine light" should flash out the codes.
On a 93 it's going to have 3 digit codes, it's going to start with code 111 I think it will flash each code 3 times then there will be a 4 second pause before it will start the next code. Remember if the "check engine light" is not on, you will only get code 111. When you are done, if you want to clear the codes turn the ignition on and when the codes start to flash simply remove the jumper wire from the EEC plug. If you want save the codes turn the ignition off then pull the jumper wire. Good luck.

Sometimes car wont crank won't even turn over turn the key and the dome light goes out battery is good don't know whats going on with it than i wait next morning it cranks

Does it make any sound when it don't crank, a click, ? when you try to start, Dosi it drain lights down? turn head lights on try starting , do lights go out or stay din? if lights stay on and return bright then chance is that you have a starter dead spot . suggest replace starter and solenoid . but first check battery ends/connection's at solenoid / clean them / Auto Zone. will test starting and charging system for free if you can bring it to them .if you have any further questions feel free to ask i will be looking for your response . give some detail on what you have tried Thank You .

My '93 ford explorer is leaking coolant. It only leaks 1/2 gallon and stops. I checked the hoses and they are not leaking but I can see leakage coming from a part of the engine I can not see, due to a lot...

alot of these explorers had a problem with the radiator leaking around the edge of the aluminum and plastic sides. An easy way to see the leak is to get a black light at night or in a really dark garage, the coolant is floresent and should make it easier to spot.

93 Ford Explorer Starter won't disengage from Fly Wheel

My ford f150 did the same thing, so I put the old starter solenoid back in( the one by the battery) and it cured the problem.
Come to find out, the after market relays aren't rated right, to get a good one, and the right one, you have to spend more and get it at a dealer.

How do you replace the ignition switch in a 1999 Ford Explorer?

This is very easy to replace. Had to replace my ignition switch on my 96 ford explorer ... Just went to Auto Zone got the switch, which was cheap and then changed it. Has instructions with it, but there is a tiny hole on the steering wheel column that you need something small to fit in and there is a spot you need to push in there, may have to wiggle around to find it, you will know when you find it and the ignition will pop out and then just pull it out, take the new one line it up and pop it in. Job done. :)
