Try checking the transmission oil level, as if it is low it will be struggling to fill up the torque converter

Check that the gear is actually going fully into reverse. Nothing interfering with the lever movement. Check that the extension housing is tight as gear jumping occurs from misalignment of box and not complete engagement.

sounds like the cable from the gear stick to the gearbox selector switch has been put on wrong ,put the car into reverse so that the reverse light is on , turn the ignition off and find the gear selector on the gearbox , pop the end of the cable off it then put the gearstick into the "R" position and refit the end of the cable back onto the selector switch , hope this helps

I have a kia rio it jumps out of reverse but hold the gear nob and it works

Hi there,

When a 5-spd gearbox cannot hold reverse, this means either:
* Worn or mal-adjusted Shift Linkage
or
* Weak Shift Rail Spring

If after having the Shift Linkage adjusted the reverse gear still pops out , then you may be facing some more costly work in your gearbox. Depending on the quote to repair your existing box, it may actually be cheaper to fit a 2nd hand one.

Good luck..

I have a 1999 chevy malibu and it jumps when i put it in gear but then some times it acts normal for a few days then starts jumping again when i put it in drive some times.

Check the engine mounts with the hood open. Have an assistant observe from the side if any of them are loose when putting the engine in R or D with the parking brake and hydraulic brakes on securely. If the engine mounts are good, they will not allow the motor to twist inside of the engine compartment very much, not more than an inch or two, and good engine mounts will not allow any clunking to occur when putting the car into 'gear.'

My car will not shift gears or go into reverse. HELP!

So I'm guessing that when you put it in reverse and it won't move. If you put it in 1st it moves but won't shift to 2nd? And it rattles. And since you have a 4.9 in it the transmission is a 4T60E. I am going to guess that you broke the reverse reaction shell in the transmission.

My car jumps when I put it into gear, but it drives fine.

open your hood, have someone shift from reverse to drive with the parking brake set and watch how much the engine moves, my suspicion is that one or more of the engine mounts are broken, making it look like the engine wants to jump out of its 'home'- moving more the an inch or so then going into gear...pinpoint the broken mount and replace. :)
