When a strut is worn, what are symptons? How can one diagnose it? KIA Sephia 1998?..

some times you will get a bouncing in wheel ,nose dive in front end when stopping or hard breaking, did you try jacking up car so wheel is just off ground ,put a bar under tire and lift up observe wheel movement ,then do other wheels , if it is a strut the wheel will move up and down freely , look for fluid leaking around strut body ,5000 miles is not much of a factor things do break.the other is get the front end off the ground both wheels,SAFELY !!!!!! WITH THE CAR SHUT OFF WHEELS BLOCKED, have one person turn wheel while you observe it , look for anything wrong grab the wheel and try to move left to right (a small ) motion observe what happens ,is there wiggle ? with out moving steering wheel. if not sure of any of these ,PLEASE take it to a mechanic .hope this helps good luck. How do you unlock a igniiton on a 1998 pontiact sunfire

its possible that you need to try and turn the steering wheel left and right (IT WILL TAKE SOME EFFORT) while trying to turn the key. and you dont need to put pressure on the key , turn it same as you would when starting it normally. you dont want to break the key off.also try and put the gear shift lever up into park at the same time( thats asuming its a automatic with shift lever on the steering colum) somtimes you can get the car to close to a curb or somthing and having pressure on the tires in a less than straight position will get you locked in on the sterring wheel, shift lever and key lock possition . so with one hand pull the steering wheel left with as much pressure as you can and at same time trying to turn key with your right hand.

I can not turn my ignition switch i turn the steering wheel and it lock up on me

Wheel pressure on the sterring column will prevent the key from turning to start position, Try turning the wheel hard to the left to release the pressure before turning the key to start . If that doesnt do it then try to the right.
Before turning car off make sure the wheels are straight or take your hands off of the sterring wheel before you turn your key to the off position.
Lots of luck Jack

Steering is hard to turn

If it is hard to turn in both directions check power steering pump fluid level. Also with both front wheels off the ground key on engine off, turn the tires manually at one of the front tires and turn with the steering wheel engine off. Check for binding (they will require effort to turn) you are looking for a change in effort.

1999 lhs steering jerks to the left

now is is pulling while you are driving also... like if you remove your hands from the wheel is it pulling left? If so you need a front end alinment... now if it only jerks when you are turning left it could be your steering stablizer bar or your left CV joint because if it seriously damaged it will cause you to steer hard and it could also break in half and you will loose your wheel...
