Question about 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier

I HAVE A 2000 CHEVY CAVALIER AND I WON'T STAY RUNNING. YOU HAVE TO PUMP THE GAS PEDAL WHILE TURNING THE IGNITION TO GET IT TO START UP. AND IF YOU TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS IT KILLS THE ENGINE.

Sounds like the fuel filter may be cloged or the fuel pump may be getting weak. have a fuel rail pressure test done. that will help diagnose the fuel system.

2004 chevy cavalier wi'll not start unless I keep my foot on gas. Then it will start but won't stay running until it warms up. While driving it runs fine untill you brare then it stalls out.


Pressing the pedal down, puts in clear flood mode. Any applicable trouble codes? Did you use a gage and check correct fuel pressure, also, see if pressure will hold for a bit, with everything off. If it drops like a rock you have fuel leak. Pull vac line off fuel pressure regulator, where applicable, if fuel runs out, you have a faulty fuel pressure regulator. You could have fuel injector leak?
Smell of your crankcase oil dipstick, if it smells like gas, either you don't change your oil and filter very often or fuel leak. There could be other issues? You have to start testing, somewhere.

check the fuel pump pressure, a weak pump will cause this, if you hold gas pedal a little will it stay running ?

That should be enough gas. Maybe the fuel pump is not working. Turn the key to on- you should hear the buzz or whine of the pump iin the gas tank for about 2 seconds. It should turn on briefly to pressurize the fuel line and then shut off until the car is cranked over. If you don't hear anything from the rear when turning the key to on, the pump may have quit working or power is not getting to it. Occasionally, a pump will still work but not well enough to make sufficient pressure for the fuel injectors to work. To check that, the pressure would have to be tested.
So, listen for the pump. If good, check your ignition by checking for spark at a sparkplug. If no spark, the ignition system will have to be checked and tests run to find the problem. If you have spark and still no go, test the fuel pressure. If pressure is low, replace the fuel filter and re-test.

98 chevy cavalier turns over but won't start


i know industry jargon can be confusing, but lets try this. if it turns over but won't start, it could be your ''ignition module'' that sits on top of the vave cover on the motor or it might be the fuel pump or filter. make sure when you crank the engine that the key is all the way turned or it may not always make a proper contact to activate the ignition module. iv'e seen this before & had to change the ignition switch & all worked ok after that. i would need to know engine lt size to give you more details on the matter. please get back to me.

what do you mean by "dash lights"? how do you KNOW the pump isnt working? how do you KNOW its good? at the ignition switch the ORANGE and PINK should have power in the RUN position the BROWN and TAN/WHITE should also be HOT in the run position. There should be a red wire near the fuel pump relay, make sure its HOT when cranking. IF its HOT and the fuel pump doenst run, the pump is bad. You can also put 12V on that red wire and power the pump.

2000 cavalier starts and then immediately stalls. Will not stay running. Put gas directly in throittle body and it runs fine until gas is gone.


i have found that the ignition switch often causes this problem, only providing power to the ignition system while in the crank position.
