Hi this sounds like the vehicle is runny verry rich, you possibly might have a throtle problem, or a fuel air regulator fault if you can it could need adjusting worse senario it will need replacing, what is happening is that you are getting to much fuel into the engine compaired to air so the fuel is not burning correctly and it is building up hence the black soot from the back you didnt say if it was a deisel or gas but either will do the same , you can try getting some brake cleaner and cleaning out the throttle body, inside there is a butterfly valve and if that gets gunked up it could stick open more than normal, try cleaning it out it might work..note..be sure to disconnect the battery before doing this or you will get an engine light come on and it will need reseting..hope this helps

The first thing you and I need to know is what the trouble codes are that are stored in the computer.
Once you know that, you will have a direction to go in for more testing.
Without the codes you are shooting blanks.
And I doubt the transmission problem has anything to do with the engine.

Engine oil smoke blowing from exhaust. Renault Laguna Diesel.121,000 mileage.

first thing to check is oil level. some diesels will use some oil. if this is real heavy soot and moisture, it could be the fuel distributor/pump going out. how does it run? if its running poorly, this could be your answer. check the valve adjustment(lash) for proper adjustment also.

Black smoke points to unburnt fuel. I would start by replacing the spark plugs and wires if you have not done so in the last couple of years.

black soot is a running rich condition it's getting to much gas not enough air .. 14-1 ratio air to gas your carb rebuild needs to be rechecked for sticking float..
