Question about 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

Transmission dilemma I have a 96 grand am. it has the GM 4t60e transmission. I have about 100k on it, and I dont think the tranny fluid has ever been changed. It is greyish in color, and doesn't smell at all burnt. I have heard that a fluid change at this point can be harmful, but I've also heard the reverse. It is working perfectly shifting wise, but it makes a slight groaning noise only in reverse. Should I drop the pan and change the filter??? Thank you. Jack Dyson

If you do, be sure to change the gasket on the pan too.

What fluid does my 96 cavalier manual transmission take ?

Your local auto store should be able to fix you right up.
My info said, GM 12345349 manual tranny fluid.
Then you/they do cross-reference for other fluids comparable to the GM fluid, meaning it should work just fine.
I did cross-reference the GM number online. At Oriellys, Valvoline syncromesh manual tranny fluid. If you don't like that store, fine, go to some other store. If anything happens, the liability is on you or the auto store, not me. Use your best judgement.

Check the transmission fluid.make sure the car is at operating temperature and in park.go to parts store and buy transmission filter kit. automatic transmission works on fluid pressure if it is restricted the tramsmission won't shift right.the fluid and filter are to b changed usually between 40 to 50k miles

Can the transmission from a 1991 Buick century 6 cyl be used to replace the bad transmission in a 1995 century 3.1? The 1995 has a 4spd auto. Or, worst case, would the engine and trans swap from the...

No the 95 is a 4T60E transmission. It's electronically controlled via the ecm on your vehicle. The 91 is a TH440T4.and is not electronically controlled. Transmissions are wired different and will not work correctly due to the ecm controller. Ther are plenty of 4t60e trannys. in the salvage yard as they are used in many larger gm vehicles.

When on a long trip the tranny shifts hard after driving for a while the next day its fine

being a GM 2000 model, Im sure its has many miles, correct me if im wrong. Take it to a GM facility and have the transmission flush and filter change, Older high miles car on domestic car is a common problems. If you have close or 100k miles, have those thing done ASAP. It will solve some of your problems and will give you tranny a bit longer life.dirty or clog tranny filter can cause the problems and shorten the life of the transmission. being a 2000 model, tranny filter should be change every 50k miles. Only newer model have 100k miles maintenance free transmission. hope that help some

Not exactly sure of what you are referring to, but I'll guess. If the spocket you are trying to remove is the one under the large clutch plate (4th gear), you'll have to remove the axle clip in the differential, then pull out axle, 4th clutch hub, and then the sprocket will come off. Did i guess right?
