What kind of transmission work does the car need? Is it an automatic or manual transmission? What happened to make you take the car into a shop to diagnose the transmission? Will your mechanic repair or replace the transmission?

I would definitely fix the car. To buy a replacement car for $2,000 would not give you anything close to what you have. I find it suspicious that the transmission needs repair. However, assuming that the diagnosis is correct, I would get another transmission and install it in the car. A used transmission should cost less than your repair estimate.

I don't see any specific question imbedded in your post, but most used cars are sold without warranty. You can check with the dealer and possibly get some type of discount on the reapairs, but chances are that with the age and mileage of the car there was no indication of a transmission problem when the dealer checked the car or sold it to you.
