Question about 1997 Mazda MPV
Hi dennis, well some of the obviouse things, first, oil leaks is the engine dry and free from oil especially on or arround the top, check oil to see condition it should be a golden brown, not dirt black, and is it the correct level. water levels, these have a tendancy to overheat ( as do most cars) if water is low, check water levels are correct and make sure it has anti freez in it, if the water is clear, this could be a sign that it is being toped up on a regular basis and could have a small leak, it might sound silly to you, but a good dusty (sandy looking) engine is good, this meens it hasnt been tarted up (with BS spray) to make it look new (ish) make sure the belts are in good condition , a sign of a warn serpentine belt is proberbly a sign that the cam belt has not been changed in a while (as normally they are changed at the same time) check service history, make sure the service history is 100% thats about it realy, hope this helped

Get the cylinder head checked and ensure there are no water leaks around the water pump, heads are expensive for these cars, also check the clutch make sure there is no wobble from the gear stick if manual.and go through the gears while driving up and down them make sure there is no crunching coming down the gears. and check the heating system works.
Hope this is helpful
