A couple of things it could be , 1 it might be leaking valve guides+seals if they are leaking the oil drips on the pistons and when started it smokes for a while but eventually clears. 2 piston rings, if the bore is scored or you have a broken piston ring this will cause it to smoke, when engine gets to presure and the oil is thin due to being warn it can seep past either the broken ring or through the score on the bore, you can get it presure checked for that one to see if its 2. 3, being a diesel if the timing is slightly out this would cause smoke and it would be getting to much fuel in the pots to burn and you get a build up of fule that does not burn correctly, but you get other problems with that one, slow acceleration, jerkiness, that sort of thing....anyway hope that helps

I drive a vw polo tdi 2006,when I went up the brigde it made a strange noise then black smoke started coming from the exhaust could not see even the car behind me,what coused it?

TDI I take is turbo direct injection so if that is the case you have a turbo problem or a split intercooler
what ever , the air/ fuel ratio has altered to excessive fuel
the noise could be a blown intercooler hose , split intercooler or turbine wheel in the turbo breaking off
Take it in for a proper diagnosis and have the codes read

VW Caddy Mk2 1.9SDI, engine hunting with black smoke from exhaust.

Hi mate

I have 3 VWs and 2 Audis the VAGCOM but before you go out and spend a ton do the following

Change fuel filter
Get you a can of Seafoam

Since my tanks are only 14 gallons I used half of it every 6 months to keep injectors cleaned.

But because you have so much black smoke I will do the full can on a tank of fuel. Give it a drive it will smoke white a bit while it clears all the all junk. If that don't help that injected went to VW injector heaven.

Good luck

Can a 1.9 caddy diesel engine successfully be put in a t25 campervan?

I don't know about a caddy engine but a very successful transplant is the 2c toyota turbo engine.

It is sometimes hard to start my jetta tdi. When this happens and I finally get it started, qite a bit of thick smoke comes out of the exhaust. Any thoughts?

It is hard starting my VW 2003 Jetta. It usually take 5 to 10 cranking before it turns over. Then it run normally. It only happens when the car has not been driven for about 6 hours.

Smoke sometimes out of exhaust bypass

It is not an exhaust bypass or filter.

It is a booster heater , which enables quicker warm up in cold conditions.

An electronic box and sensor only kicks heater on when subzero conditions. It burns diesel , hence the smoke from underneath passenger side.

Hope this helps.
