Some smoke is normal in high milage vehicles. As long as there isn't smoke coming from the pipe all the time you will be ok. Mostly what happens is the valve seals will deteriorate and leak some oil into the piston chamber which will burn when the vehicle is started.

White smoke from engine on Start up

Sounds like the turbo. Have you ever changed the turbo? If not, I would bet on that. If you've changed it but have more than 60-80k miles on it, same.

Idle is high at start - 1800 rpm. Seems like excessive white smoke from exhaust. Put into reverse and back out of driveway it has a regular shudder (bump bump bump) but not hard metal grinding sound.....

white smoke out of the exhaust would be a sign that it is burning coolant... if it goes away after it warms up, it could just be condensation inside the exhaust pipe. 1800 rpm is a very high idle, maybe have your IAC motor on the throttle body checked... check engine light? if so have the code read at your local auto zone.

97 f250 5.8L starts to run rough and puffs out thick black smoke. It comes and goes. Any ideas?

Exhaust problems. Black smoke=exhaust, blue smoke=oil, white smoke=water.

Burning oil

i believe what you have going on with the car is your Valve seals have gotten brittle and have cracked. now the reason it smokes on startup is because when you shut it off. the oil is bypassing the valve seals and is collectiing in your combustion area. this is very normal with older cars. or cars with high milage. and as far as the price factor goes it is hard for me to tell you if it is worth fixing or not. because you will be looking at taking the heads off and puting in new head gaskets. but i have a 1976 dodge pickup and i replaced my seals because that was the only problem with it. now all i can tell you is take the car into a shop and get a compression test done to the motor this will give you an idea if the motor is worth it or not. if the compression is up to par i would replace the seals if this was my car.

Big puff of white smoke at start up after sitting for several hours.

white smoke is water
blue smoke is oil.
nest time try and smell the white smoke see if it smells sweet?
if it does its antifreeze.

Saab 9-5 blowing white smoke from exhaust

One way to check for a blown head gasket, is to simply smell the coolant reservoir. Pop the cap, and see if it smells like raw gas. Every headgasket, I've diagnosed has had this smell, even if the oil is not contaminated. Another way is to hook up a coolant pressure tester, and run the vehicle for 15-20 mins or so. If the head gasket is blown, the pressure will exceed 15 psi. sometimes as high as 25 psi. If there is oil in the coolant overflow tank, the head is cracked, about 90% of the time.
I'm working on a 03 Saab 95 2.3l t. This vehicle smokes on initial start up, then the smoke disapates, and the vehicle is fine. Another mechanic diagnosed it as bad valve seals. I disconnected the pcv system, and the vehicle no longer smokes. If the valve seals have gone bad, the vehicle will smoke on acceleration. Also if the turbo seals are leaking it will smoke more heavily on acceleration.
