So I need another transmission? Do you think it could be shift linkage? How costly do you think it will be? Thanks for your help...

  • NeedHelp2010 Feb 08, 2010

oh by the way I did have the gear oil done a few days ago. I was told it was dirty, but not burnt...

Sincro mesh? Just an estimate of how much time and money do you think it will be? I really appreciate your help!

  • NeedHelp2010 Feb 08, 2010

Last time...is this the only thing you think it can be? I need all possibilites. THANKS!

  • NeedHelp2010 Feb 08, 2010

The sincro mesh in the transmission is bad and is what is causing it to pop out of gear. the sincro is a mechanism to help it go into gear and hold it once there.

trans will need tobe removed and repaired. 350 to 500 for remove and install of trans and the work to the unit itself should be 200 to 300 at the very most. good luck and thank you for using fixya.com

yes it is the only thing that would do this and if you call any transmission shop they will tell you the same. i own and run a repair shop and have been working on cars for almost 20 years now. this is the issue. good luck

It is very possible that the internal shift forks, shaft, gears or shift rail are worn out and need to be replaced. This requires special tools and skills to repair. The only thing you can do besides pull the transmission, is to inspect the gear fliud for proper level or chnage the gear fluid to see if this helps.

At this point it may be bast to have a shop lokk at it first and give you an estimate. Due to the mileage, and your description, I gave an educated guess as to the cause.

  • GetMeOttaHere Feb 08, 2010

Yes, it is the only thing I think it can be with out inspecting it myself. Sorry for the bad news.

You'll be happy to know that this is a cheap fix and you may be able to do it yourself for about $20 and an hour of your time.

There's a rubber seating ring at the base of the shift lever that when it wears causes the trans to pop out of gear. It may start out popping out of just one gear but as the seat wears further it will start popping out of more than one gear - but always gears where the lever has to point in the same direction - for example, 1, 3 or 5 (shift lever towards the dash) but not 2 and 4 (shift lever towards the seat.).
