This problem is caused by internal fluid pressure loss, this is due to seal leaks within the transmission as seals age the heat makes them hard and they loose there ability to seal, in order to correct this the transmission must be resealed, since this repair requires the transmission to be completely torn down and a seal kit installed, at this point the transmission should be just overhauled or replaced with a factory rebuilt unit, the advantage to this is that a factory rebuilt unit has all the latest parts, transmissions are constantly improved, and whenever they re-manufacturer a trans thye use all the latest parts, the advantage is a better opersting and longer lasting transmission, there is one thing u can try before going to the large expense of a re-manufactured trans, that is a complete fluid exchange, this may soften up the hardened seals and restore proper operation for a limited time, it is worth a try, a trans flush can be done for about $100.00 or less if you shop around, price's vary greatly, dealers charge upwards of $200, some oil change centers charge less than $80.00, oil change center are the ones to call, the competition is greatest with them and the price the lowest in most cases.

Transmission making loud grinding/sucking sound, doesn't go when in drive or reverse

Is it an automatic John? When was the last time you checked the level of your ATF (automatic transmission fluid)?

There are many different types, so make sure you get the right one.

If it is a manual shift, check the gearbox oil level. If that is OK, you need a transmission specialist. Look in Yellow Pages.

That transmission is one that has been used for years in Dodge and Plymouth vans. Do you know when the last time was that the fluid was flushed out and replaced? It's pretty important that it be done every 90K miles.......have it checked out.

My fiance has a 1999 BMW 528 I, it now requires that you manually shift it from 3rd to the normal driving gear almost 1/2 the time. It is an automatic, what causes that, where can the dip stick be found...

The automatic transmission in a 1999, Series 5 BMW, which is classified as Tiptronic (access to individual Drive positions 1 to 5 is offset toward the Operator, from the P,R,N,D positions), and the transmission is lubricated for its' life; therefore, a dip stick is not available. BMW does NOT recommend shifting the transmission fluid. However, it can be shifted by first draining the old fluid, and then refilling with the recommended fluid level to the fill hole, directly at the transmission itself.

sorry but time to visit the transmission shop. the only thing you could try first is Lukas Transmission oil sold at parts stores one quart only. make sure you get the oil for transmissions and not the crankcase.

First thing to do is check the fluid level if that ok you may want to think about having the transmission filter and fluid changed, there are other possibilities but check these first
