Probably like mine, it will go up if you use the key on the tailgate. I would imagine it is the switch. Since it is on the console, anytime water gets in due to unexpected rain when sunroof is left cracked, water gets into the switch since it is not waterproof. If the tailgate switch doesn't work then you have another issue. Motor, fuse or wiring.

I haven't replaced it yet. I am going to try electrical contact cleaner and see if that helps. You can get a can from any RadioShack and some auto parts stores. Just spray into switch and keep it off the plastic around the console just in case it discolors it.

That idea and the cup holders are the worst thought out ideas I have seen Toyota design on the '91. Love mine though... 255k on factory engine.

I have a 1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara, The backdoor is unlocked but it won't open when you squeeze the handle. Is there any way that I can get the backdoor open without having to take it to a dealer?

it sounds to me like the linkage inside the door may have come off. you have to remove the door panel that is if you can open the door from inside. if not you may be able to open the door with a slim jim. no matter what you have to get the door panel off to fix your problem. that can be a task if you can't open the door.

Remove the rear door armrest by prying upward (secured with 3 clips/claws)

Remove the rear window switch assembly by prying upward (secured with 4 clips/claws)

Remove one phillips head screw from behind the inside door release handle.

Remove two phillips screws from either side of the door pull pocket

Pry the bottom edge of the panel away from the door, releasing 7 pop-in fasteners

Lift up on the panel to remove it from the door.

Once inside there will be two 10mm bolts holding the glass onto the regulator.

Elantra Backdoor shuts closed and does not stay open.

replace the hatch struts. I'm assuming you're talking about the back hatch. There should be 1 or 2 struts (look like shock asborbers), they've probably gone bad.
