Question about 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser
The most common failure is an airbag flexible contact ribbon open circuit, this is called the clock spring rotating contact, the airbag system can be scanned by the dealer to confirm this problem, if u want to spend the $50-$75 for a new clock spring contact here is how you replace it, 1st you disconnect the battery negative cable for 30 min's prior to starting work, this is a must airbags can cause serious injury or death if not disarmed before disconnecting them, they are a explosive device, ok that said next go to the auto parts store and buy a Steering whell puller, the airbag is held on b y 4 screws at the back of the steering wheel, they are down in holes, most are either 7mm head or phillips, use a flashlight to see which type they are, remove the screws, carefully disconnect the airbag connector and then use the puller to pull the steering wheel off, under the wheel u will find the round clock spring spiral contact, it is most times held on by 3 or 4 screws, remove the screws and remove the old contact assembly, follow the instructions that come with the new part to properly install, use reverse order to put the wheel back on and re install the airbag module. Take your time, remember disarm the system as instructed!
