Sounds to me as if the defroster grid has a crack or two. Carefully inspect the fine lines for cracks and repair them usingg a do it yourself kit from most part stores. The cracks might not show up very well and it can be time consuming. Make sure to clean the grid very well before doing the repairs. most kits are really easy to use, just a paint like solution and it doesnt take much to re-establish the connections on the grid.

Rear defrost not working on 2004 Impala

Most GM cars and trucks use the fuse panel for safety with the rear defroster...Check your owners manual for the location of the fuse block...I think it is inside your glove box...Try the fuse first...if not the fuse...your options include replacing the glass inserted strips...(do not remove) with a rear shelf defroster blower motor... or an add on rear window defroster...Your auto parts stores should have both...Hope this helps.

Rear Defroster not working-getting some volts

You should have battery voltage at one side of the grids and it should decrease as you run a meter probe across the grind due to the resistance of the grid strips.

Rear defroster is not working

the rear defroster strip will be a posative signal on one side and a negative on the other, check that the switch is not bad, by pulling it out and connecting the wires to one another.

Rear defrost stopped working. All contacts are on

The strips that are attached to the glass that run horizontally always suffer from the age old problem of corrosion. The best way to tell if it is these strips that is causing the problem is to hook up an ohm meter (x10 setting) and check for continuity. If this is good, the relay that feeds the defroster is probably bad or disconnected. This is located under the dash by the fuse box. Check to see if it clicks, and further check to see if you actually get 12v at the contacts back at the back glass. (12-50v setting). If you get 12v and the strips check infinite ohms, problem is, of course, the strips. Best fix is a new glass, but there are kits available that might be able to fix it (various results). Good luck.
