This may sound stupid and I don't even understand why but have read several times that the thermostat installed backward can cause this.
As mentioned, even if it is physically possible, it seems like it shouldn't cause this, BTW, I have bought thermostats that were bad right out of the box.

Don't take this as an insult. I've seen it happen. Is the thermostat in the correct way? Faulty thermostat?

when your engine is hot, check the temperature of your rad,if you get more than 30/50 degrees difference between the top and the bottom of the rad,you need to have your rad professionaly flushed. If you have a digital laser it will out perform any other temperature testing tool.

try checking the hoses for blockage, and if not that make sure the fan is working right as it might be the fan cluch,or your water pump may have went out, best of luck

Car overheating

when the car is cold, fill the radiator, start the car. Leave it running with the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens. If it opens the fluid in the radiator will be circulated by the water pump and the electric fan will turn on and cool the radiator. If not, the engine will overheat because either the thermostat is not opening or if the fan doesn't come on, the fan sensor is probably at fault, or both. If there is a noise and fluid leak, the problem could be the water pump. If there is no fluid leak, the problem is likely the thermostat or the fan sensor.
