If you smell burning oil, you may have a leak in the engine compartment reaching the exhaust manifold and burning on contact. The most common cause for that is leaking valve cover gaskets. If you are losing oil with NO signs of external leaks, the engine may be burning it internally. Valve stem oil seals, worn piston rings, blown/leaking head gasket are a few causes of that.
There can be alot of causes, such as valve covers leaking, oil pan gasket leaking, oil filter leaking, rear main seal leaking, front timing chain cover seal or gasket leaking even bad rings. Does it smoke out of the back? Your valve seals could be leaking. Best way to find out if you have a leak is to inspect the valve covers manually, or take newspapers and lay them under the entire engine on the ground, and it will leave the tell tale stain of a leak. I;m doing the same on a 4x4 95 yukon. I used a 1/4 drive deep well 3/8 socket and a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter - it was just short enougto ckear transfer case but long enough to clear the pan. But now my pan wont come off because of transfer case in the way. I am looking at lowering transfer case vs raising front of engine- good luck
oil filter screws onto an adapter housing which also has the pressure sending unit on it (above oil filter). This adapter housing bolts to the block with 3 bolts. if oil appears to be leaking from where the adapter housing meets the block (especially at the rear side of engine near bottom), then you need to replace the siamese o-rings between the adapter housing and the block ($12 part at dealer). remove lowest 12mm bolt and loosen top 2 12 mm bolts(top 2 bolts won't come out unless you drop the engine down, but loosening 1 inch is all you need), replace o-rings and retighten bolts. be careful not to get dirt/grit between block and adapter. just finished doing this to son's 95 2.7 v6 which was leaving an 8" puddle of oil after idling for only 1 minute-worked perfect
it could be that they put a filter on it that is defective or the oil sending unbit is going bad and battery well that might mean that your battery is going dead and needs to be replaced i would try battery first
