My alt is charging at 18volts what could be the problem

faulty voltage regulator
check with an accredited auto electrician as voltage regulators can be internal in the alternator, external and in the engine compartment or on later model cars , in the ECM
required voltage from a regulator is 14.5 -14.8 volts
any thing higher can boil a battery and destroy it or put excessive voltage into the electronics causing failures there

How to install a external voltage regulator on 99 Oldsmobile aurora

No way to do this, the alternator is not made/engineered to use an off alternator external voltage regulator. Why would you need to do this?

Where is external regulator located at?

I do believe that the voltage regulator is inside the alternator. I own a 1993, and that is where mine is at.

All cars have a voltage regulator of some sort. Some cars are externally regulated (mostly older cars) and some are regulated by the onboard computer. Such is your case.

Ignition system wiring, voltage, regulator how to repair

Hello, again, again Bridget. First I sent you explanation of the ignition system and I gave you my best guess---ignition module on your 1994 Plymouth with V6 3.4 L engine.

As far as voltage regulation goes there isn't any external devise to do this. This voltage voltage regulation take place inside the alternator after the three phase AC voltage is turn into none regulated DC voltage. Now this DC voltage goes thru a voltage regulator that built into the alternator where the output DC voltage is 13.8 to 14.1 DC Volts. Now, the alternator is regulated for current by the it wire windings in the alternator. Larger the copper wire the more current the alternator will produce. GB.....stewbison

I have an 86 toyota pcickup battery charge light is on have good battery and replaced alternator twice.

i think you have an external voltage regulator in that year , ck that first . The easy way to tell if it has an external regulator ,if it has carburated it has an external regulator if its fuel-injected its internal regulator in side the alternator.Have you checked to see how much voltage the charging system is putting out at an idle ? It should be around 13.5 volts to 14.5 volts any less then 12.5 charge light won't go out.

You cannot run an external regulator on this, your only solution is to replace the ECM.

Alternator not chargeing can i use wd40 to help

First of all.. Check to see if ya have 12 volts going to the back of the alt. If so.. call your parts house and see if it has an external voltage regulator. If so, try a regulator..That was a tricky year when they had either internal and external voltage regulators. otherwise.. get a new alternator. sometimes, the volt gauge will cause a non-charge issue. You can straight wire the gauge to eliminate that.
