the automatic four wheel drive and the automatic lights that come on when you shut off the jeep quit working. I did have a bare wire and it hit something and blew something out. I have checked all fuses inside and under the hood. nothing is blown. Could it be one of those black fuses or switches that is in with the fuses that you can see through? Could you tell me the location of the fuse that I need to replace that controls the auto four wheel drive and auto lights?

    it has a V8 engine.

the jeep is stuck in the snow and the front wheels are not doing anything. Its in all time four wheel drive. The four wheel wheel drive doesn't work and the automatic lights inside that turn on when you shut down engine quit working also. I have checked all fuses that are clear to see through to see if they are good or bad. I can't find anything that is bad. I have checked all fuses that are inside under dash and I checked all fuses under hood. Could it be a relay switch that is bad? There are black relay switches under hood next to the fuses. I don't know what relay switch it could be. thanks

    ok thanks

let me ask you this. The only things that work that four wheel drive is the lever that goes to the transfer case plus you need vaccum to make it work? I was reading about the vaccum sysytem and it has a vaccum hose for the four wheel drive.

Thanks for your help. I'll have to check that transfer case out.

  • scottallenha Feb 11, 2010

I wanted to let you know that you were right on with what you said. I did have two different problems with the jeep. Just like you said, my transferr case is totally mechanical. My problem was low fluid in the transferr case that caused the four-wheel drive to stop working. My transferr case takes regular transmission fluid and the fluid was low / old. I did notice the jeep had been leaking transmission fluid for some time but I didn't notice that it was coming out of the transferr case and not the transmission. I had been keeping up with adding fluid to the transmission but you have to crawl under jeep to check the levels in the transfer case by taking out those plugs. I flushed out transferr case and put new transmission fluid in it and it works just like new. Thanks so much for your help.

Do you have a V8 or 6 cylinder engine so I can look at the diagrams? Thanks

  • edwin187 Feb 09, 2010

How do you know the all time four wheel drive isnt working? Thanks

  • edwin187 Feb 09, 2010

The 4x4 isnt electronically controlled in anyway so It should sounds like your probnlems are unrelated. The 4x4 is because of the transfer case and the lights are from wiring. I'll look at a diagram for the lights and let you know what thats about.

  • edwin187 Feb 09, 2010

As far as I can see it doesnt have vacuum connections either.......It is mechanically engages in 4x4 at all times. If it had the optional 2wheel drive then there would be a vacuum or electronic actuator.

Why doesnt my 4x4 work on my 2000 jeep quadra drive i just got it and i took it to a mechanic and he said that if the 4x4 wasnt working then the car wouldnt run since its a 4x4 all time. the front wheels...

Quadratrack transfer units work by way of an internal fluid coupler (same as your mechanical clutch fan but bigger) It is always on but not always engaged. It engages when the rear wheels start to slip.
It should lock in low range though. (in low range you should not drive over 15mph).
if the front wheels won't engage at all, then either there is something wrong inside the transfer case or inside the front differential. Both are usually noisy if they have failed but I've seen some that the ring gear has been removed as well as the driveshaft (sometimes) after the diff has failed, so it can be driven. Find another shop that's more familiar with that unit and have them take a look at it if you don't see anything obvious.

1995 jeep grand cherokee grinds when shifting into full time four wheel drive. What gear should the transmission be in when shifting four wheel drive?

Try neutral. or in drive, but just crawling. Give light pressure to the stick and sort of let it just fall into 4x4

2000 jeep grand cherokee four wheel hi not working but four low works fine

Does the rear axle still pull when in 4-hi? If so, then I'd say the shift fork on the transfer case is bent or worn.
