I believe you are referring to the engine cooling fan ?
If it is cycling I would check the fan relay, and coolant sensor.
You may also have a code that you can retrieve using a OBD II reader
Please let me know hat you find.

What causes fan to continue running when engine is off and the battery is drained

it could be a faulty fan relay, however some of these had a continue run time program that allowed the motor to cool off after engine shut down. it shouldn`t run longer than about 2/3 minutes.

How low is the alternator? 13.5 v with the motor running is about as low as I would want, but if you hear something running after you turn it off, it could be draining your battery. It is not uncommon for cooling fans to run after you turn the car off but shouldn't run for long. Can you look at yout cooling fans and see if that is what is running? How long do you hear the noise after you turn the car off?

I have a 2007 Toyota matrix and the fan that cools the motor will not shut off even when I turn the car off, this causes the battery to run down, any ideas what the problem might be

Does the fan really run until the battery goes dead?? OR are you afraid that it might run until the battery is dead?? In many cars, the fan will continue to run for a short time after you shut it off.... until the engine coolant is cooled to a certain point. It can also run for a while when you've been using your air conditioner. Now, if it is actually running continuously and won't turn off, there is a sending unit somewhere that isn't functioning correctly, either in your cooling system... or your air conditioning system. You're going to need to do some research and find out which sending unit might be the culprit..... or take it to the shop. They'll know what to do and can probably quickly fix it.

2001 Volvo S80 cooling fan runs for about 30 minutes after turning off the car.

This is normal. The fan will run even after the car is shut off until the engine gets below operating temperature. Most vehicles will do the same thing. Although I think thirty minutes is an excessive amount of time. Most could run up to fifteen to twenty minutes. If the car is retaining heat somehow this would cause it to run longer. Happy motoring!!!

Our Regal's a/c fan was stuck turned on, even w/ the ignition turned off. Draining the battery to dead. My wife took it to a Buick dealer who's only solution at that time was to pull the fuse out. So...

the radiator fans use a fuse, relay, temperature sensor which the computer controls to turn on the fans at the specified temperature.you don`t say if this problem occurred when the blower motor fan fuse was removed.it is not uncommon for the rad cooling fans to seize and not work, the blower motor uses an electronic resistor block on the air box under the hood with i think about 6 wires in the plug and is about 3.5"long and 1"wide.held by 2 bolts(screws).this is feed power all the time and when the control switch is turned for different fan speeds the switch grounds the circuit.at times the resistor shorts causing the fan to run continually.i think you need a new resistor to fix this problem.

When i turn off the car the fan continues to run?

Many cars have this feature. The fan will run for a few minutes at a time until the coolant in the radiator drops below a certain temperature. Most vehicles with this feature will have a warning label on the radiator shroud indicating that the fan may start without warning when the engine or radiator is still hot. The only time you would need to be concerned would be if the fan continues to run without turning itself off, and causing the battery to be drained.

01 Jeep Grand Cherokee Will not start, the dash lights do not come on and it makes a clicking sound. occasionally dash lights flicker on but still does not start and clicking sound continues when key is...

your battery is dead...plain and simple. try to turn on your headlights, if they do NOT come on then its obvious what is wrong. if the dash lights didnt come on then more than likely thats the battery. ultimately you may have to replace the alternator, that could be the cause for your dead battery not being recharged by the alternator while the vehicle is running. get a jump and leave the car running/driving for at least 30 minutes, turn it if the car starts and runs you may have to wait and see if you have the same problem in the near future, if so then it isnt your battery thats the problem, it would be the alternator at that point. Occasionally Battery light goes on momentarily

could be a defective alternator, but the mechanic will need to check it while the light is on. I know that sound like BS but if he checks it while the light is off, of course its going to check good.

Fan continues to run/Battery goes dead

Hi Scott,
The electric fan should run, for a few minutes or more depending on how hot the cooling system is. ( normal )
I would suspect that the problem is the battery, Or the terminals are corroded or loose. Have it checked under load, Any auto parts store will do it for free.
Heat and vibration are the most common cause of battery failure.
Unless you are constantly draining it all the way down, with a car stereo. or some other voltage drain.
The average lifetime of a battery is actually about two or three years, Less in hot climates.
Good luck and Keep those Jumper Cables handy till you get it diagnosed.
Regards paul
