Question about 2001 Ford Escort ZX2

1 Answer

2001 Ford Escort Zx2 car is stuck in park. I'm not very in tune with this car and can't tell if the culprit is the parking pawl (130,000 mi) or electrical. I never received an manual so not 100% comfortable tearing through inside out yet.

Check the brake light switch above the brake pedal. Move it or jiggle it it may need to be replaced.

There is a solenoid lock which works on the brake light circuit, if the brake lights are working it is possible the solenoid has packed up. Need to check it's operation.

Wont shift out of park once car is started

I am guessing this hasn't always been the case but just in case I will tell you many cars will not come out of park unless the Break in fully pressed as a safety precaution. I don' t know if that will help you or not but I hope its something that simple for you.
Good luck.

2001 Escort ZX2: it wont go out of park...

There is a safety lock-out that keeps you from taking the car out of gear if you don't push the brake. If your brake lights still work then the switch is good. Also, some people have reported that if the high mount brake light is bad it will keep the car from being shifted out of park. If all of your brake lights work then the solenoid is bad. Remove the center console to get to the solenoid. Since the solenoid is expensive most people just zip-tie the solenoid open so that you don't have to push the brake to shift it from park.
