Sounds like either the starter relay is shorting or the wires going to the starter are shorting or touching at the starter

My 87 jeep starter stays ingaged when I try to start it

needs shimmed or the bendix is bad in the starter and not allowing to release. most likely just needs shimmed if it's a new starter, however you can get a bad starter (new or rebuilt)

Starter will not ingage from the ingnition.

Not sure what you are jumping, but a mechanic would check for power at the key switch and the neutral safety switch.

I just recently bought a 2005 has a few malfunctions that are rather apperent..sometimes the starter does not ingage when i turn the key switch, but i can go underneath the hood and short the...

Your starting problem is probably either in the key swithch, starter relay or you have a bad ground. I would check the starter relay first. Most often found in the interior fuse box, but you also have a fuse box insde the engine compartment. The overheating is most likey a faulty thermostat or water pump (if you havent checked it already). If you have a kinked line, replace it, it could be leaking, but ultimately it is not giving you the proper fluid flow pressure if it is kinked.

1996 ranger starter will not ingage, have installed new starter??????

Did put the right wire in the right connection?
Test the starter by shorting the terminals on the solenoid and (+) solenoid cap.
If it engages the problem would be in the ignition relay or switch.
If it does not engages the but the motor runs the problem would be the the bendix gear drive!

Better yet the garage will check it thoroughly!

Starter ingages while truck is running.

look for a fault in the ignition switch first ,like put a test light on the feed wire for the starter on the back of the ignition switch ,have a feeling it could be a broken contact spring and its loose inside the switch .
