Question about 2002 Toyota Prius

1 Answer

About 6 mos ago my prius went over the grate that keeps cattle confined. Right afterwards, my red alert went on, telling me that the problem was PS (power steering). When I re-started the car, all signs went away. By the way, at the time the power steering did disappear. It happened a few more times that week, always re-setting with a "re-boot". Recently, now this is 6 mos later, the same thing happened 6 x in one day. I drive 70 mi round trip to work; I live n CA, so it was driven a lot. I took the car to the dealership (I figure no choice on this issue). I was told the rack and pinion steering needs to be totally replaced- at a cost of $3578. I had thought the problem was electrical - a short or loose wire-since the first occurrence was after a jiggle on the road. What do you think?

Hello Kent.
In this system, the controller determines the direction and the amount of the assistant force based on the signals from the vehicle speed sensor and the torque sensor that is built in the gear box.
Built in is the keyword here Kent. Unless you can convince them to do a dis-assembly, which I doubt due to possible litigation if it fails again.
What about the possibility of a unit from a rebuilder or an auto recycler?
If you opt to go that route it may need to be reprogrammed into your Prius.
Hard to believe the price tag on this job.
Seeing this will certainly keep me from buying a Prius.
If you need anymore help, let me know.
Good luck with it.

What does the warning signal PS in toyota prius means?

PS sign indicates problem with power steering. most likely is has electrically assisted steering and needs attention. may want to contact the dealer to make sure it is not under a recall before pursuing any further. the Prius cars have had alot of problems recently.
