Question about Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4x4. It has the Command Trac four wheel drive system. It sounds like it is stuck in four wheel drive. There is no apparent difference in sound between 4 wheel drive high and 2 wheel drive high. Though it will bind while turning in 4 wheel drive. Is there a relay that is supposed to release something in the transfer case as well as the front differential?

Hi, Have you tried backing up for approx. 50 ft to let the transfer case disengage? How many miles are on the vehicle? Any noise? When was the last time the transfer case fluid capacity was checked. Sorry for all the questions. No need to rate this response, but the info provided will help. Thanks.

Wont go in four wheel drive

what does won't mean?
  1. The lamp don't come on. (the lamp can be out)
  2. actual 4wd fails , that is, the tires don't turn, up front, under power, id bet you didnt check? actual 4wd actions?

which one.? which 4wd do you have.? and what mode did you select.?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_four-wheel-drive_systems

on Part time, you cant drive on dry pavement in PT 4WD.
got Part time? I think not, but??? dont know for sure....
Guessing:
i bet you have select track (no GRAND in title)
quote:
Selec-Trac offers full-time all wheel drive in addition to the part-time 4WD of Command-Trac. Full-Time all wheel drive has the ability for the front and rear axles to rotate at different speeds, making driving on dry and wet surfaces possible year-round without shifting back to 2WD again. It still has the ability to lock the front and rear axles.
end quote
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

do not use COMMAND-trac on dry pavement. its for ice or offroad only.

How do I activate the 4 wheel drive for snow highway driving?

They didn't make Grand Cherokees in '86, so I assume you mean '96?

I'm also assuming it is indeed a 4x4 and not a two wheel drive...sorry, I have to ask!

All the V8's GC's were Quadra-Trac. Please confirm this with what is label on your shifter. If so, it should say "4Hi, N, and 4Lo".

The Quadra Trac system has a viscous coupling. Meaning, that when the rear wheels start to slip, it heats the coupling up, and engages the front wheels.

This system typically put about 95% of the power to the rear wheels, and only about 5% goes to the front during normal driving, so it's essentially in 2wd mode.

When you put the transmission shifter into neutral, and pull your transfer case down to 4lo, then you have all four wheels locked. Do not drive like this on dry pavement.

To answer your questions, the 4x4 should automatically engage when the rear wheels start to slip. It is a seamless transition and you really won't be able to tell.

If you're in real bad snow, then pull it down to 4lo. That'll lock all four wheels in and give you greatest traction.

Drive safe.

Jeep Quadratrack does not shift into 4 wheel drive

the quad trac is an alltime 4wheel drive system. it does have a control module that helps transfer the power from front to rear. if it is a 2008 it should be under warranty and you can have it checked out for proper operation
