If by functional you mean that it's still bolted in place and holding the suspension together then yes, but that rattle that you hear is the strut rod inside the cylinder bouncing up and down really fast with no resistance so it really is not functioning at all.

This depends on what is loose. It can be the source of the rattle but is doubtful. Start by checking for loose components with the car sitting on the ground as well as jacked up. Some components may only rattle under certain circumstances.

Sure but its bad change both rear struts as a bad handling sitruation can come up and you'll lose control of the car.. All of the struts are likly to be bad if the car has over 100 thou and chaning just one will cuse a handling balance ptoblem.

How to :replace rear strut assembely and related parts

Behind the rear wheels the shock connects to the lower control arm. and somewhere above the rear wheel well in the trunk behind the carpeting is the base for the shock. From what I see there re no stuts in the rear te coils come off after the shocks have been undone

My tires are slighting inwards the back tires. what could be wrong?

The only reasons that I could come up with are the stut to knuckle attaching bolts are loose or have been loosened maybe alignment that wasn't done correctly or new stuts that they didn't bother with an alignment. Could also be the struts themselves are frozen. To check and see if in fact they are frozen, bounce the rear of the vehicle and see if it bounces a few times SOFTLY or do they bounce with little travel, very stiff like. Hope that this helps. Best wishes.

WHY DOES SERVICE RIDE SELECT LIGHT ON IN MY 1994 CADILLAC DE VILLE

one of the stuts / shocks have gone bad and need to be replaced. I am getting this done as I type this.

Electronic stuts are 600-1500 dollars and passive stuts are 300-600 dollars. Also if using passive struts / shock you need a relay/connector to bypass the computer command ride control. The can be made for a few dollars or bought on the net for $85.
