Question about 1998 Volkswagen Beetle

2 Answers

I have a 1970 VW bug that was running perfectly until the other day. It was raining, I heard a 1 second high pitched whirl sound, and the car died completely. The engine will turn over but it is not sparking or starting. Did the rain short out my coil? Any ideas? Also, the engine seems much harder to manually turn via pulling on the fan belt. The engine is a stock 1600. Recently had a brand new carburator installed. The car was running great but just died unexpectantly. I have checked the points, distributor cap, and the coil and ignition wires. How do I trouble shoot this problem?

1st check for a 12v feed to the coil and to the fuel solenoid on the carb as this may have shorted or become disconnected. If these are OK then check for a spark by turning the engine over and looking for a spark between the coil lead and an eath, should jump a 2-3mm gap.if you have a good spark then there may be a fuel issue

Clutch noise

Bearing noises in a clutch system are easily distinguished by running a few simple tests. Start the engine and leave the transmission in neutral. If a transmission makes noise when it is in neutral it is often a worn input shaft bearing. Now depress the pedal until the clutch just engages. This is the point where the release bearing is just contacting the pressure plate fingers. If you begin to hear a squealing sound this is likely a worn release bearing. If a whirling noise is present when the clutch pedal is fully depressed it is probably the pilot bearing.

Car starts , idles a few seconds, then stalls

Could be a plugged fuel filter; very old gas (car has been sitting unused for some time) has pasted through fuel filter and clogged it. Fuel pump in gas tank is weak and the electric motor in fuel pump runs, gets hot and stops. Have someone listen behind the back bumper away from muffler. The sound of a fuel pump can be heard close to the underside of fuel tank (high pitch whine). If the sound stops before the car dies...that would indicate a faulty fuel pump.

Battery light comes on when it rains outside.

The surpinetine belt is slipping on the alternator. A high pitch squeal can sometimes also be heard, because rain water is making the worn belt slip. So replace the belt first. Other possibilities are the idler tensioner might be weak, or worst case is the alternator itself. Also check if your battery cable connections are clean and tightened, because the battery may not be getting a proper charge.

1970 Chevy 350 in C30 truck dies when warm

You need to find oput what you loose when the truck shuts off, all you need is Air, Fuel , and spark to run one of the three are droppuig out when it stalls and will not run. Chech the carb for gas it sounds like you have a weak fuel pump.

Whirling Noise

Sounds like fuel pump pressurizing the fuel system. They do that for 2-3 seconds and then it stops (for fuel injected vehicles).

Why does my paid off 2000 VW Jetta GLS make a high pitch buzzy grinding sound. Is it the alternator ,transmission,or timing Belts. What do I do and how mauch can it run me. Am I still covered with the

The trick is to take off the belt and spin the different things and see if any of them make the noise you hear.
Water pump, alternator, power steering, air pump, belt tensioner pulley. You could also briefly (30 seconds) run the engine without the belt and see if it still makes the noise.

High pitched car sounds

does the noise and light occour at the same time ? another cause of a high pitched noise can be slipping drive belts, alternator, powersteering etc so check them for tightness, condition etc, does the noise happen when car staionary and just rev the engine ? if so i would say it is the drive belt/s, go back to the VW dealer re the ABS light and get them to check the OBD as should be done as part of the service , hope this helps
