Question about 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport
This sounds similar to the problem I have had with my Montero Sport. I was having charging problems as well as poor performance.
I had a wiring harness feeding the alternator and spark plugs replaced. Since then these problems have gone away...and I've been dealing with the alternator problem for a long, long time.
Hope this helps.

Check all cables to the starter and the ground or negative cable from the battery to the engine or frame. They get old and break down between the insulation and you wont get enough current to start the car
