There is no space for me to even see where the belt should be going - I know how to change the belt, just not how to get at it...

Most cases all belts can be put on with out removal of anything but it does require special belt tools in your case you might have to if its easier, try doing it from the right front tire area, removal of the inner fender well might make it easier than the coolant res.

You have to use the special serpentine belt tool that is thin enough to get between the engine and the strut tower, and remove the coolant overflow reservoir.

How to replace thermastat in a 2006 mercedes cls500

Make sure the engine is fully cold, open the radiator cap on the plastic reservoir, drain the coolant into a large pan by opening the plastic plug at bottom of radiator - reclose the plastic plug when drained. Cover the top half of the serpentine belt with a plastic bag. Remove the spring clip radiator hose connection at the engine block/thermo housing. Move the radiator hose back and forth gently until it breaks loose. Loosen the 10mm bolts holding the thermo assembly in place. Tap the thermo housing with a rubber or plastic hammer or pry the housing gently with a long blade screwdriver from behind by the lip, Remove the bolts all the way, remove the thermo housing, clean the circular ring area of debris in the engine block where the thermostat sits. Place the new thermostat assembly in place, torque bolts to 5 nm, then back and forth to 12nm then to 22nm. Replace the radiator hose, put on a new clamp and fill radiator with coolant as well as the plastic canister. put the cap on the reservoir, remove plastic bag from serpentine belt, start car - check for leaks, readjust coolant level after 20-25 minutes.

Where is the serpentine belt adjustment on a 96 cavalier 2.2 litre

Hello ycharger.
The cavalier uses a spring tensioner and is not adjustable.
If your belt is loose it is most likely that the tensioner has seized or the spring has broken and not keeping the belt tight.
It will require the replacement of the tensioner as an assembly.

Not a real easy one to do though.
Here is the guide from the manual.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove the coolant reservoir.
  2. Remove serpentine belt.
  3. Remove two generator bolts.
  4. Remove power steering pump and position aside.
  5. Remove tensioner bolts and tensioner.
  6. Reverse procedure to install, Torquing tensioner bolts to 37 ft. lbs.
There you are, I hope it helps.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Which motor mount bolts do I need to remove to threat the serpentine belt on a 99 Cutlass 3.1 liter, or do I need to remove any? Thanks a lot.

my manual indicates this is only required on 97-98 models. you should not have to remove any motor mounts. Here is the procedure from autozone.com:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If necessary on the 1999-00 3.1L engine, remove the coolant recovery reservoir.
  3. Remove the belt guard located on top of the belt, between the water pump and the power steering pump, if necessary on the 3.1L engine.
NOTE: For the 3.1L engine use a long 3 / 8 inch drive ratchet or breaker bar.
  1. For the 2.4L engine and 1999-00 3.1L engine, remove the drive belt from the vehicle.
  1. Rotate the belt tensioner.
  2. Place the drive belt around the pulleys according to the belt routing diagram.
  1. Slowly release the belt tensioner.
  2. Check belt for proper routing. Also, make sure belt is not twisted.
  3. If removed, install the belt guard and/or coolant recovery reservoir, as applicable.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
WARNING Before starting engine, make sure the belt is not incorrectly routed or twisted. Check to make sure no stray tools are in engine compartment. Starting the engine with an improperly installed belt may damage belt, engine, or accessories.

CAUTION Incorrectly installed belts and stray tools may cause flying debris. Clear area before starting engine.

  1. Start the engine and check for any belt noises such as whine, rumbling, or squeal.

All of my coolant leaked out but my car did not overheat? the coolant also seemed to be bubbling inside of the reservoir..what could be the problem?

once all the coolant leaks out your temp gage wont be accurate because there is no contact with coolant and the sensor that takes the temp reading. broken serpentine belt, weak belt tentioner, clogged cooling system

My car is over heating and cokkent oil is leaking

Cars generally overhead when engine coolant is below acceptable levels. That can be caused from leakage, blockage or equipment malfunction.

  • Inspect coolant level in the vehicle's reservoir or radiator.
  • Inspect radiator and heater hoses for cracking causing leaking.
  • Inspect the radiator for leaking.
  • Inspect the inside of radiator for smudge build-up, a sure sign that the water jackets might be restricted.
  • Inspect water pump for leaking or broken belt (serpentine belt)
  • Check to ensure water pump properly functioning, does the pump's pulley turn?
Repair or replace any faulty item.
