Question about Lexus RX 300

1 Answer

I have had the car in two different shops. I have had the sunroof checked and had that fixed. I thought that was the problem, but next rain again the floorboards are soaked. I have had the car for six years and it has just started leaking. I can not figure out where the leak is coming from and neither could the two shops I TOOK IT TO. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your advice. I am going to try myself to run the water and see what happens. Supposedly the second place I took it to said there was a clog in the sunroof drain, but he said that he had unblocked it, and supposedly fixed it. But it rained two days ago and the car floor is soaked again. Any other suggestions?

I am in the processing of checking the solution out, but it does make sense.

    Thank you!

Hi, I am not sure what procedures the 2 shops took to elvaluate the cause for water wetting the floors, but if you open your sunroof you should see a hole at each corner. These holes are connected to drain tube, and clog, causing water to run into the vehicle. Sometimes in rare cases the drain tubes can also come loose. When the fronts are loose water runs over to the top of the windshield and then down the INNER door seal (not the seal you can see from outside the car) before finally dripping near the speaker and onto the carpet.
The fix is to run a wire thru the holes to free up any blockage and/or use a compressor to blow out the holes to remove blockage.Where safety goggles when performing this procedure.
You can also use a garden hose or a glass of water to simulate the rain, and view where the leak enters the vehicle. This is a very common cause for water entering the vehicle. I am assuming the door seals are doing their job keeping water out,and the 2 shops most likely confirmed this?

No other suggestions at the moment. I don't know how well they "cleaned the drain", but the drain hose may also be loose. If this is the cae, it will require the interior to be disassembled and is a big job. Start with the easy procrdure first, then take it from there.

1999 volvo s70 problems What must I do to get the rain water drainage system working properly ?

Do you have a sunroof? Cars have drainage holes up there that often drain into the door jamb on the front doors and sometimes down the rear pillars and behind the trunk/boot lining and exit the car near the wheel wells. Often, the connection at the top to the pipe comes off at the top corner of the windscreen.

Others have the same problem. Sunroof drain mentioned and how to fix.

Leaks by feet

1st the sunroof leak- there is some type of channel/drain to direct water out of the sunroof area. Open the sunroof and look around the outer inside area for evidence of junk blocking the channel/drain, such as leaves, dirt, pine needles, etc. and clean out with a vacuum and toothpicks (to dislodge). If you can find a drain tube in a channel (it should direct water to the underside of the car), the easiest way to clear it is with compressed air.
2nd Since this is much worse since the windshield was replaced, I am thinking that it was not installed and sealed properly. So, first try to clean the channels and any drain tube(s). Next, with a hose, spray the windshield only, not the sunroof, and see if it leaks at your feet in the front seating area. If it does, the windshield install is to blame for the leak there.

Floor mats soaked on passenger floor

IF you are leaking from the sunroof in the front passenger side, you can remove the A-pillar cover next to the windshield (right side from inside of car) with a hex wretch, which is under the little plastic cover) and make sure the tube connecting the sunroof rain drain on top is not kinked or broken or not connected. Simply pour some water slowly down the drain on top with the sunroof open to test it. My was "somehow"kinked and I was able to fix it. There is also a NHTSA service bulletin #SI-B51-30-08 for 2003 BMW X5. If the tubing is not the problem, I would call BMW dealer and see if they fix the problem because of the "recall". Good Luck!
