Question about 2005 Ford Focus
Could be something on the exhaust system - perhaps it blew under the car or you drive over it (paper, plastic bag, etc.). If you have a new muffler, this is common for a week or so. Take a look under the car. Hopefully this is the case.

you may be leaking something on the exhaust- probably power steering fluid or you may have run over something like a plastic bag and it stuck to your exhaust and is melting. you may want to have it checked because either could start a fire under the right conditions

Sounds like your fan belt has broken or is slipping (it also drives the water pump on some cars) or your alternator has seized up and is burning the belt.
