I have a 98 talon n just bought it it wont go into 5th gear trying find out if the synchronize is it easy to fix it or get aother 5speed trans

Synchronizers are fairly inexpensive, but tearing the trans apart and changing them is not something for the untrained. If you have a shop go through the trans at least you will know what you have.

I lost 5th and reverse shift in my 91 samurai. I pulled the trans and found that the arm where the shifter goes into 5th and reverse is sticking in the up position, instead of dropping back down. I have...

You know the thing is 20, 10 years beyond its service life. Something has lasted twice its projected life and you are disgusted? Find a used transmission with much lower mileage and install it, obviously you have the skills to R&R, or find a rebuild kit and rebuild the transmission. It may be cheaper in the long run to scrap it and find another vehicle.

5 speed manual transmission wont stay in 5th gear ,

can be lots of things,,, 4wd or 2wd, must i guess that?

let me guess, easy, and cheap first. ok? no need to go hog wild on guessing, at your expense ,no?>

  1. all vitara/tracker/sidekicks, all have the 2 plastic fittings in the shift box, go, well, to dust, or crack, and then the shift lever bounces and goes out of gear or in fact was never fully in 5th gear, detents.

  2. loose bottom rear transmission mount, (beat to death)

  3. shift rails failing, (detent failure (springs and balls)

  4. burned up fork on 5th gear, due to running trans dry. or near or GL4 fluild looks like, tar and metal filings ; ever consider do ing the service on that, drain and fill, running it on 24year old gear lube?

  5. the 2 front rubber plugs love to fall out (glued in) and then GL4 slowly is lost and gears/bearings and forks are wrecked.

  6. bad 5th gear bearing, rear.

  7. bad 5th gear front bearing. if flops about, and jumps out of gear.

  8. 5th gear synchro ring, broken, causing ill fitting 5th gear DOGS

bearing 30 and 31 are the 2 bearings mention above.

the last guy with 5th failing gear 35 , spins were wrecked.

running trans near dry,. expensive fix. with new cluster 26

see plastic 27 below.

that page even shows how to run and shift trans with extension housing off, to prove the box is good or bad, such a deal , no ?

how does the shifter feel.
is it loose
are you sure when you move it that it is changing gears.
if it feels loose or sloppy you may have broke the pin that holds the shifter to the tran
take the boot off the shifter and check

I just installed a clutch in my 96 saab 900s 5speed transmssion with a 2.3 l nonturbo and also a clutch cable and now I cant get it to go into reverse or 5th gear . Anyone have a clue ?

Loosen shift coupler where you disconnected from rod.Remove shift boot at front there is a hole put an allen or dowell in it to lock the shifter on trans side where shift rod exits tranny theres another hole for a pin. Line these up and tighten coupler and that should do it.

Reverse wont work properly, sometimes have to pull hard

The transmission type wasn't specified as to manual or automatic,as both were available on 91-96 Stealth's,but from the complaint,i presume manual trans. If it is the manual trans,5th gear and Reverse gear are usually on the same shift rail.So part of the diagnosis is to pay attention to 5th gear for any problems.Another part of the diagnosis is the clutch pedal and hydraulics that activate the clutch. When the problem is happening, try this:pump the clutch pedal rapidly, and repeatedly, then try to engage Reverse. If it goes right into Reverse, then the clutch hydraulic system needs to be inspected.Good luck.
