Question about 1991 Honda Accord

1 Answer

Engine overheating I have a 1991 Honda Accord with a 2.2 litre engine. Just recently I was have it Aircared which is a test done by the government to check pollution levels. Just after I was driving home from the test the temperature gauge was showing hot. I let it cool down for 10 minutes and was able to drive it home but the gauge still showed hot. 2 or 3 days later I drove it around the block 3 or 4 times but the temperature was normal-right in the middle of the gauge. I then took it to a local mechanic and he did a pressure test on the cooling system. He said it was probably a head gasket. Even when I drove it down to the shop the temperature was perfectly normal. My question is could this be a head gasket problem and why did the temperature gauge show hot only once but never did again after I took it to the testing station?

Cooling fan works good because it came on when he was doing the pressure test. I take it that the thermostat is okay because the gauge shows normal temperature. Thanks for your comments

Actually you are probably be right. The cooling fan did come on when I got home, he said it came on when he did the test but his pressure tester was nothing like the one you described. I think I might get a second opinion because if like you say that the thermostat is old or sticky would explain why the gauge only showed 'hot' once. I asked him why this might have occurred and he just couldn't give me an answer.

Is the radiator low on coolant? dont think you have a bad head gasket, does sound more like a bad cooling fan and/or thermostat

coolant fan doesnt come on when doing a pressure test, pressure test is having radiator cap off radiatior connecting a radiator pressure pump up to radiator and pumping it up to 18 psi pressure. know as far as thermostat could be old and what is called sticking, which is when a thermostat is old, can cause not to open, stay open, delay opening,

Can a 1991 Honda Accord be converted to have OBDII system for emissions

Not sure what dynamometers have to do with this, as they are not necessary for emissions diagnostics or testing, but rather are used for performance tuning. However, sure you can change your 1991 to OBDII. Simply replace the engine, wiring and computer to a 1998 or later system.

1997 honda accord smells like its overheating but radiator is full. what would cause this

The engine can still be overheating even with a full radiator. However I suspect that the cat converter may be the culprit and be running too hot. Run fault codes and check for HO2S codes

Overheating in 91 honda accord

Remove the thermostat and run the engine at idle until it starts to overheat. If it does then the radiator may have clogged veins and needs replacing.

I have a honda accord 2 litre auto .with starting problem when engine hot, but if Ikeep trying usually start and occasionally cut out while driving can you help??

When was last "healthy" tune up? Plugs, wires, all fluids & filters? (especially fuel filter) I'd start there and also run a good fuel system cleaner through it.

1991 honda left side radiator fans runs longer than right side after engine turned off, solution?

hey, i responded to your other posting, you are correct that one fan is for a/c, one for regular engine cooling, it is normal for the radiator fan to run for 2 minutes after car is shut off. I believe the a/c fan only runs when a/c is on, so I don't believe it's a problem, unless it isn't running at all. Is the car running hot or overheating? If not, it sounds normal.

1991 honda drivers side fan runs after engine shut off

If the engine is hot the electric fan will run until it is cool. As long as the engine isn't overheating and the fan doesn't run for more than 10 minutes or so it should be ok. If it has two radiator fans they should both be running though.

Honda Accord 1991 idles high then low

)The fact that thge engine idle fluctuates when it is cold indicates that the Fast Idle THermo Valve is out of adjustment.
This valve is located ot the front of the intake manifold on the driver's side just below the accelerator cable. To adjust it, wait until the engine is cold (best to do it first thing in the morning).
Remove the two screws holding the cover on and start the engine. There is a brass needle sticking up through a plastic ring that has two slots in it. With the engine idle fluctuating, use a thin flat blade screwdriver to SLOWLY turn the ring CLOCKWISE
until the idle stabilizes. Once done. put the cover back on withg the two screws and you should be done.
