The valve body piston is sticking. it will shift manually for the rpm's makes a difference upon your techique of driving it as well as manually shifting it

try -5degrees before top dead center,(TDC) and then later advance it to the ping point of you fuel. (low or high octane)
How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? Are you saying it will start and idle, but if you put it in gear, it stalls? I didn't quite understand your last sentence? My database doesn't have much on your particular vehicle? I did find fuel pressure spec for 1798 cc engine, 51 psi.
Fuel--spark--compression. I'd probably want to check if your losing rpm signal? I can only talk to you about the basics.

Take the battery cable of for a wile and let it re boot put it back on and see it clears and it stays off. Some times just clearing it with the computer dont clear it from the source
Ford : back the truck up 10ft put truck in neutral and disengage four wheel low. (You can't drive in four wheel low cause its a pulling gear and you won't do over 3-5 mph.)
Nissan: start truck see if it idles normal. If so rev motor and check throttle for sticking and check EGR valve make sure its not stuck open or malfunctioning when you drive it..
it maybe a pluged tranny line did you get it flushed?? a little metal shavings might have made there way up there and caused a block so get that checked
