Question about Jaguar XJR

2 Answers

The v8 XJR Jaguars had a cylinder liner problem being I believe in 1998 and for a few years onwards. What years were affected and when was this problem solved. Can an 1998 Jaguar XJR V8 engine be put in a 2000 Jaguar XJR? or are their severe complications. What years are XJR supercharged engines compatible.

My Jaguar mechanic tells me their are enough differences between the 1998 and 2000 XJR electrical, sensor, and computer connections that putting a 1998 engine in a 2000 Jag is quite difficult.
The thing is I have a good 1998 jag xjr engine that was recently factory rebuilt and relined with steel and
he tells me it is very risky putting this in my other 2000 XJR which needs a new engine. How serious
a problem is putting a rebuilt 1998 XJR engine into a 2000 XJR Jag.

The 4.0 V8 was used from 1994-2003 in the XJR, so those years will interchange, the year u want is 2002 or 2003, the problems with the cylinder liners was due to the type of material thye was made from, it was called "Nikasil", these liners failed early due to premature wear, in the 2002 model XJR 4.0 V8 the liners were made from Steel and with that the problem disappeared

U stated the that you wanted to know what engines will work, the years I gave u are the same engine, of course there may be different sensors and such, but that should not be a problem to any technician that really knows his stuff, the engine will bolt in.

Engine starts first time but if it cuts out it wont start again

sounds like your engine is the old v8 with nicosyl coated cylinders they wear badly due to high sulphur content in fuel which eats away at the cylinder walls they lose compression and swithed off or stalled when cold and it wont restart. later engines had cast iron liners check your engine no., to see if thats your problem. have changed up to 4 engines a week a few years ago because of this issue.

Blown head gaskets can be very difficult to see. If the vehicle is fitted with cylinder liners in an aluminium block, then also check liner security and for any potential cracks. Also check the cylinder head for cracks and to check if it has warped. You will need a straight edge for that and perhaps a thin sheet of paper or some feeler gauges.

there may be a software update for the powertrain control module for mis-fire monitor. check with your local dealer. but if thats not the case, these engines are known at least in my experience of having the heads crack between the valves and cause mild mis-fires. try compression testing all the cylinders and performing a leakdown test on them as well.

Where is the crank sensor located?

The sensor is bolted to the top of the cylinder block near the rear of right cylinder head
The sensor is accessed by removing the right front fender liner
  1. Remove right front tire and right front wheelhouse liner.
  2. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor pigtail harness from main wiring harness.
  3. Remove two sensor (recessed hex head) mounting bolts
  4. Remove sensor from engine.
